Michael and his wife Primrose have been long-term SRGC members though he is best known for his unstinting service to the Alpine Garden Society.Michael spent 35 years as Secretary, probably the long-serving officer of the society. He was involved, through all that time and afterwards, in many other aspects of the society, too. One can hardly cite a single area in which he did not take an active interest and make a contribution. He was a Speaker, a Judge, a Tour Leader, gave immense input to the AGS displays at Chelsea, one of the best of which, designed by Michael Upward, was made by the AGS in 1989 in celebration of the AGS' 60th year.

He was known, liked and respected by many people, both inside and outside the world of alpine plant organisations. Michael will be greatly missed. We send our warm condolences to Primrose and their family at this sad time.
