Don't lose your seeds!
« on: May 19, 2015, 08:34:01 PM »
Diane Clement of AGS Seed Exchange fame recommended these little bags to me for bagging seed pods. They are the bee's knees (=very excellent) and not too expensive - about £7 for 200 on ebay. They don't go soggy when they get wet, and are very easy to put on and undo later. To apply, just slip over the seed pod and pull the ribbons on each side away from the centre, no need for knots. To undo, don't try and untie the ribbon - pull apart the 2 sides of the bag instead and the ribbon will unfasten itself. Heaven! :) :)

What a great idea, I went to Amazon and ordered a hundred for $3.88 and free shipping.  I now will be able to save my Hepatica seed without cutting up teabags.  Thanks for the tip.

But you've put the teabag-emptying minion out of work! I hope he's a union member.

Nifty bags, and probably nylon/polyester so reusable time and time again?

Pleased to see that you will have a good crop of seed, Anne.

Yes, they can be re-used lots of times. I now have a redundant box of the cheapest tea-bags money can buy. Any offers? ;D

These look great Anne (and thanks, Diane), perfect for all those (Narcissus) seeds that drop just a few hours before you get to them and the frits which hardy begin to open before they're blowing away. I'll be buying some.

No VAT, postage is much cheaper out there than over here, no mark up from a seller in this country.  The Yuan is being kept artificially low in value these are the main reasons

I use 5 x 7 cm, great for bulbs and hepaticas.
I got mine from here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191243774005?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=490378551276&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT but there are lots of other sellers.
The only problem with getting stuff from China etc is it can take a LONG time for them to get here, by which time your seeds will be in the grit top-dressing just waiting to give you some fun with forceps!

Last year we lost the seed from this trillium just as it was becoming ripe to some unidentified varmint, so this year we have now bagged the seed heads! (These bags didn't come from Hong Kong(!) - Gillian just made them with some muslin and a sewing machine ;) ). Now just a six or seven year wait until the seedlings flower! Even with our very dry summer seed looks to be setting pretty well, but we never get any on T. grandiflorum or T. luteum - must get several different plants and cross between them.

I just order 100 assorted coloured 7 x 9cm one for A$5.95 free postage. With a few grandchildren they might come in handy for other uses too.

I've gone for the more traditional 'Army Green' but some small black ones arrived this morning (separate orders)  ;)

Thanks annew, you have saved me so much messing around with various schemes.
