Official list of registered snowdrop names
« on: May 26, 2015, 10:22:14 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a list of snowdrop names already accepted? I want to register some varieties, and need to know which names already have been taken. I guess the majority of names have not been properly registered, but I'd like to avoid duplicating any already in use.

Hi Anne, I'm guessing you know that the KAVB are the official registrar for snowdrops but I don't know whether, as part of maintaining that register, if they monitor names which have been formalised by the other (publication) route and include them so there is a list of established names for checking first by anyone wishing to name a snowdrops to make sure their proposed name isn't already in use.

I should be able to give you a reasonable idea whether your proposed names are already taken (established) so email me and I'll check for you.

I hope this helps.

But only 115 results for 'Galanthus' - always thought there were more....  ???

Thanks Thomas! I too am surprised by how few registrations there are.

The standard procedure to register a new cultivar is to send some corms (30?) to the KAVB, who grow them for one or two seasons before they register them - not sure if they received 30 Galanthus Elisabeth Harrison  ;D

No doubt the regulations of the KAVB  work against the registration of Snowdrops - let's face it, the system is geared, naturally enough, towards the bulb industry, where it will be expected that sales stocks will number in the tens of thousands, so submitting 30 for trial is a drop in the sea, whereas with snowdrops being " found" and named by individuals who might only have three corms at the time, there is little chance of a many submitting to the registration.

Certainly the RHS daffodil and narcissus registration requires no such submission!

I'm dumb-founded at this. How can a registration authority really be a registration authority fit for purpose when it only allows new plants to be registered for a hefty fee (the bulbs). No one in their right might would register anything, would they?

Gerard Oud did register some of his Galanthus - I would like to hear his opinion,
and maybe he has some helpful additions to my (surely not complete) comments....

We have touched on this before

I think the general consensus was not entirely favourable!

The KAVB registration says 'It would be appreciated if some bulbs or tubers of the cultivar to be registered could be sent to the KAVB to be planted in our Trial Garden.'
I'll check the names with Matt as well. The International Checklist for Hyacinths and Miscellaneous Bulbs held by the KAVB is available as a download that requires credit card details but doesn't say how much it is...

I registered Galanthus "Cressida" with the KAVB in 2014, see http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=11561.msg298652#msg298652 .  As I don't live in the Netherlands there was no charge to pay and I did not have to send any bulbs.  I returned the form and photos by email.  Acceptance was very quick.

If you look at the KAVB list I think it is evident that they do not monitor other publications for new names.

Anne, I have sent you a PM with the email address of the person at the KAVB to whom I sent the form and photos.  Although I began as a sceptic, I found the KAVB registration so easy that I am a convert now.
Almost in Scotland.
