Galanthus, June 2015
« on: June 22, 2015, 08:13:57 AM »

The first couple to flower in my garden, more to come later.

Elwesii clone from Marcus originally.

G. rizehensis just starting, I think this is my favourite snowdrop.

How nice to see them!  It fills our 'June gap'!! I look forward to seeing more which will nicely build up to our autumn season here :)

In our rock garden we had one clump of Galanthus elwesii which is now 3! These ones at the front of the bed must be seedlings as there seems to be a little variation in the inner green markings,
cheers

I'll say this quietly (at this time of year it should be safe enough for the mad galanthophiles to be elsewhere ) - I do rather like these little flowers. Such sweet wee things.  :D

Anthony, I was just talking to Otto about this the other day. Yes I've had good seed set on Galanthus ikariae and Galanthus elwesii. Many of my snowdrops are brand new to me so I have no experience. Rizehensis flowered last year but I don't recall mature seed capsules. I will be paying careful attention this spring. Otto says he doesn't need to grow Galanthus from seed because the bulbs multiply so readily for him, and as he also pointed out, with so many species and varieties growing from seed would invite genetic mixing.

I must find someone who sells snowdrops in New Zealand. I once made the mistake of asking at a garden centre and they'd never heard of them.

Anthony, Galanthus would indeed be a rare thing in Auckland - I cannot imagine them growing in such a humid climate. Our temperature is more suitable 'down south' - days have been icy with frosts of minus 5 & 6 the usual at the moment. Some days the garden has not even thawed out. Snowdrops have always been very popular but we do seem to have a growing band of 'mad galanthophiles' at present.  G. jaquenetta going for $50 last week on Trade Me.

The seedlings I have are coming up for the third year, so they will grow here.

I had a look at the Maple Glen website. They have a nice little selection Anthony. Splash out and buy yourself a couple. Delivered in flower! That's service.

Thanks. Might order the Galanthus ikariae and the Narcissus triandrus. Not sure what Orchis micranthra is as it isn't on Google.
