Hymenocallis 2015
« on: July 10, 2015, 12:31:02 PM »
Hymenocallis Harrisiana opened 2 flowers today.  A quite reliable species for me, flowering every year and even setting seed.

This bulb is being sold as Hyline grandiflora, not a valid name. Probably Hymenocallis fragrans.

Hi Maggie I just now saw your question.
The plant is about 10-12" tall.
A very nice plant for a pot or to plunge in summer.
It is self fertile too!

Rimmer,

I admire you for keeping the Hymenocallis leavenworthii alive, let alone getting it to flower.  I have killed it several times here.

beginners luck!
it is planted in decayed pine bark and turface in a gallon pot which goes outside in full sun in summer and watered regularly. when very hot i put a saucer under the pot. in the fall when the leaves start to get red spots due to night temps too cold it is  brought inside placed on my basemen floor and keep dry in winter.  the leaves turn yellow and crispy when it goes dormant in the late fall when water is withheld. i just leave the plant the pot but the "soil" mass is light and dry.  basement temps is now 55-70  night- day (heat from lights) and  45-70% relative humidity, it will get much dryer when it really gets cold out.

the seedlings were under a humid dome on a heat pad under lights until a few weeks ago .  i took off the humid done recently to let the seedling dry out for the winter
