Salvia candelabrum
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:22:20 PM »
Salvia candelabrum has an Award of Garden Merit with a hardiness rating H3/4. We planted several plants on the AGM bed in Sheffield Botanic Gardens about three years ago. Most of these were lost to hard frosts but one remaining plant had grown large and by early June was flowering profusely and looking spectacular. Two weeks later it had shrivelled up and died. When removed there were no obvious reasons for its demise - no vine weevil -good root system. Interestingly some of the young plants in the nursery also showed similar symptoms a few days later. Could it be a fungal infection ? Has anyone had a similar experience ? An AGM ought to be a sign of a plant which gives few problems so maybe this is something new ? Any suggestions, please. (We never experienced any problems in the wetter conditions at Kerrachar).

Such die-off has been mentioned in passing here :

Thymus longiflorus dying???

Suddenly all the branchlets are hanging while there is enough water in the pot. Too cold (5C)? Fungus? Too wet? I noticed the same in Salvia candelabrum and Cistus. During winter they let their leaves/brabchlets hang down and die after some days. What should I do? I have healthy cuttings so the clone is not lost but still, what's happening?

Thanks,
Hans

So it's not unknown for this to happen ...... :-\

Interestingly, the Missouri Bot. Gdn. page on the plant suggests using it as an annual, because of it's tenderness :

Yes, Maggy. I did pick this up but discounted it. Ours was not a winter death from wet or cold but a sudden demise of plants in full growth in a decent June. The plant in the Sheffield Botanic Garden had grown well through a couple of winters including one which was wet and another which was reasonably cold - and our Kerrachar winters were pretty wet but we kept our plants without difficulty. Seems much more likely to be some sort of infection ?
