Gaultheria paraguayense?
« on: September 24, 2015, 09:09:50 PM »
I was given a plant with the name "Gaultheria paraguayense".  I haven't been able to find any reference to that name or one under Pernettya.  Has anyone a clue what this might be?
Thanks!

Might it instead be Gaultheria/ Pernettya  patagonica? ( which is a synonym of Gaultheria poeppigii var. nana:-\

Thanks, Maggi. "patagonica" was the closest name I found, too.  Here's a picture of the plant.

The paraguayense bit rings a distant bell.   Will ask Barry Starling.  Maybe it was Mike Stone that mentioned it, he was big on them.

When Ken saw this he immediately said it was a parent of Barry's Pernettya 'Pearls'.  In retrospect that's where I recall the mention of that species and wondered why 'Pearls' would have not hardiness issues.

Barry replied:
"Pernettya paraguayensis is not a valid name but there is a Pernettya around under this name. It looks like P. pumila but I think it is a high alpine form of P. leucocarpa.  There is an article of mine "The Smaller Pernettyas" written I think, in the early 1970s in A.G.S. Bulletin. It should be on line - that gives more info. Will be in touch on my returm, Barry."

Meanwhile Ken says it's The Smaller Pernettyas (1972), AGS Vol. 40, pg. 309.

Hope this helps.

Well done Ken - and Barry !
Unfortunately the AGS  does not have a full archive of its journals  online  but I can  get a copy for you, Claire, if you do not have that journal.

Thank you, all, for the quick look-up.  I probably have the journal, because Betty and Ned Lowry gave me Betty's collection.  I will pass this information on to the folks who gave me the plant (the Pat Calvert Greenhouse at the Washington Arboretum, Seattle).

I'll send you a copy anyway, Claire, so you can pass that to the W.A. if it's useful.

Can find no mention of Gaultheria  paraguayense in the index for the SRGC journal.
