Crocus October 2015

[Boyed]

It is a peak time of crocus niveus blooming in my garden. I adore this crocus. Very showy large crocus, my second favourite autumn crocus after speciosus. makes agreat display in the garden. grows and increases well in an open garden in my place, easily overwinters under snow cover even under -30 C.

1. Crocus niveus white form from Jānis Rukšāns. Nice form with beautiful goblets, wide petals, strong constitution of petals. Love this form a lot.
2. Another white niveus from Tony Goode
3. Crocus niveus bicoloured form Jānis Rukšāns
4, 5, 6, 7. Crocus niveus bicoloured grown from seeds, received from Tony Goode many years ago. Very beautiful and robust form. I adore it!!!

1, 2. crocus goulimyi. I have different forms. This form is from Tony Goode. The best grower and increaser among my blue forms.
3,4. crocus serotinus samlzmanii. Vigorous large from, again from Tony Goode.
5. crocus pulchellus 'Zephyr. One of my favourites.

I've been posting some crocus in my forum blog "Making the best of it" - showing the progress through the season here. 

Here's one I'd be interested in any views on.  It came to me as seed labelled Crocus tournefortii x boryi but I'm not convinced.  It looks within variation of tournefortii.  I like the delicate feathering.

Nice to see them looking so well.  I fear I have lost the large, vigorous serotinus 

I have plenty Tony. It grows and increases perfectly in my place. Can send you as much as you like. Next year I am going to harvest most of my crocuses.

In first is Crocus armeniacum from Janis
In second is Crocus speciosus 'Cloudy sky' - its almost identical isn't it? Maybe there is one subspecies of speciosus is Armenia and this is armeniacum?
The third picture is puringhiorum now puringiorum

Those later flowering speciosus ssp. have very strong tubes. For me those are totally different to the other speciosus species like bolensis, mazziaricus ... . I'm not a botanist (:-d) but i can only see they flower different in autumn by time and flower (stronght). So for that reason (for me) its better to put not all in to the same group of speciosus!!

Ruben, your crocus is not armeniacum by 100 %. I suppose it was mislabeled.
In regards to splitting crocus speciosus in different species; I am not a botanist as well, but I think the opposite, as I don't see any serious visual attributes, according to which they can be considered as different species. As to chromosome numbers, in literature it is clearly stated that crocus speciosus from different localities may have different chromosome numbers. So it is not a surprise. I just consider them as one species with its variation: quite simple, easy and comfortable. At least for me. Among these new species from speciosus group, for example, I have different attitude for ibrahimii, as it is, indeed, distinct, but again I consider it as subspecies, not species as suggested. As an individual, I have my own opinion and preferences. And, I think, the same is with botanists. They don't always agree with each other and have their own opinions and approaches, often contradicting, which is quite natural.

No - stays open - points to being tournefortii.  But then all the plants I grow as this x have flowers that stay open at night .... even the ones that look like boryi
