No, David! It (C. purighiorum)  belongs to speciosus group but has different chromosome morphology and number so in no case it can be speciosus. Then you will regard C. brachyphilus of Scneider, striatulus of HKEP, mine archibaldiorum, Brian's ilgazensis and xantholaimos etc. as speciosus, too. Ok - all yellow crocuses then are flavus, all blue - vernus. OK will be more "progressive" - all blue ones with ring like tunics are biflorus and all yellow ones - chrysanthus. No more problems with identification. But, unfortunately reality is different...

I always think when I see these discussions that it is a good thing we do not apply the same rules to humans,if we did there would be as many species as there are of crocuses.

Yes, it is so, althougth not so numerous, but if we would stay isolated for some million years more, there certainly will be several different species between humanoids in Afrika, Australia, America and may be even in Eurasia (last finding of third high developed humanoid species in Siberia). Although there were at least two (in Europe) human species (Neandertahl and Cromanion - may be spelling incorrect) which could occasionally interbred and modern people has 1% on Neandertahl genome incorporated, so both species occasionally hybridised when met in prehistoric time.

Ruben, I am glad you like 'Cloudy Sky'. It is, indeed, a good and strong variety. Just a note, 'Cloudy Sky' is not armeniacum, it has white anthers and it is from Northern Armenia. Armeniacum is from the South, from surroundings of town of Goris, and it has yellow anthers. In your both pictures, is the same 'Cloudy Sky'.
