Narcissus October 2015 in the Northern Hemisphere

Well potting of my show standard narcissus is just about done. 116 pots. Most containing 5 or 7 bulbs. Miniatures are in the tunnel already. These flowers are generally only used for the earlier shows as field grown flowers cover mid to late season shows. These pot flowers will also be used for breeding as better control over pollination.

Always very satisfying to be able to look over a fine stack of pots like that, Dave - full of promise , eh?
Rather daunting though, at the star of the task, when you begin to contemplate the amount of compost needed etc..... we do put ourselves through the mill for this pleasure, don't we?

Due to our position on the side of the Earth the compost is actually kept in.

Narcissus rupicola x serotinus ‘Autumn Little Moon’
N. rupicola is shy to flower here but this hybrid is floriferous

That's a beautiful hybrid, Tatsuo.    Did you make the cross yourself? Was wondering if N.rupicola was the seed or pollen parent? The hybrid appears to have inherited a lot of its character from N.serotinus.

Hello, Anthony. It has never yet set seeds here. Perhaps it's sterile, but I'm just trying hand pollination this season.

Tatsuo those look lovely. Well done. Do you just grow for pleasure or are there shows to display at?
At this time of the year, when winter is quickly approaching, it is great to see that flash of yellow that makes you think of spring.
