Not having this huge range of colours is the only thing I reproach to the American hepaticas.

We have our Hepatica glabrata from a seed portion from Severin Schlyther.

Severin has spent Hepatica glabrata in some of his own crosses, we got a portion seed when it entered into. this plant is sterile.

Glabrata is not very large. I wonder if Hepatica prickel is a cross of glabrata because it resembles the little.

Since Hepatica americana flowering is coming to an end I will show a few pictures taken over the past couple of weeks. First images show the common habitat they grow – maple-beech woods, in combination with Quercus, Carrya, Tilia…rarely pine and spruce, at least in NW Ontario. Usually on rocky, steep slopes. This gives a good hint about the cultivation needs; they need a lot of light during flowering; the trees leaf out precisely when the seeds start forming somewhere in mid May.

The previous year foliage is still beautiful on some specimens. In the second image is a form with the smallest leaves I've ever seen.

I won't show here my all thousand Hepatica pictures but there is one, most interesting found this year - a H. americana 'diversiloba' type. I noticed the leaves in late fall-winter (best time to scout for good foliage) and the flowering was equally surprising - they are scented and unisexuate; very few with reduced anthers.

It is very cute - granted there is space for improvement of the flower colour. I found young seedlings in the same area with the same small leaf, so the trait is transmitted through seeds, at least in some percentage.
