Lily Beetle 2016
« on: March 22, 2016, 10:43:12 PM »
Found first two lily beetles when weeding today.  One on a hellebore and one on the soil.  No lilies through the ground yet but my one and only crown imperial is a few inches high.

None here after I started spraying my Frit imperialis with a systemic pesticide. I've been checking this year but there aren't any

Found one a few days ago on a dormant Sarracenia. Not sure what it was up to as there were Lilies nearby.

Blasted thing trying to lull you into false sense of security, I expect - they seem devilishly cunning.

I found four of the red devils on my L. Philippinense today and swiftly put them to the sword, they have really gone for it this year, mostly left my others alone.

Found an adult on my Cardiocrinum giganteum on Tuesday and a few larvae on it and on the non flowering plants.  I was cutting down Aquilegias on Tuesday and Wednesday and found a good number of lily beetles on Lilium martagon.  There are too many lilies to inspect them all but was able to despatch a number spotted while doing another job.
This larva looks ready to pupate.

Yes, John I did.  I can squash adults with my bare hands but do need to put gloves on before I cn deal with the larvae.  They are disgusting.

Found three more of the Red Devils on my Lilium philippinense again today, soon flattened them under my hobnail boot.

Small trick against dropping down adults
Spray a little cold water over the beetles
They don't let themselves drop down any more  ;D

That's a great tip - I wonder if it will work with Vine weevils too?
