Scottish Rock Garden Club 47th annual Highland Plant Show in the Nairn Community Centre on Saturday 30 April
Show Secretary David Shaw told the 'Gurn from Nurn' - a
local online blog
: "The Scottish Rock Garden Club will hold its 47th annual Highland Plant Show in the Community Centre on Saturday 30 April. The show is organised by the local Highland Rock Garden Group and was originally staged in Inverness, at various venues, until the new Nairn Community Centre opened and has been at this venue ever since.
This is the first flower show of the year in the area and the largest show of its kind in the north of Scotland. It has proved increasingly popular with local people who come to admire some well grown examples of hardy perennial plants, bulbs and small shrubs. In addition to the show there is a large plant sales area with trade stands from Rumbling Bridge in Fife, Ardfearn at Bunchrew and Askival in Fort Augustus, all selling locally grown hardy plants. In addition there will be the Highland group’s members stand with an eclectic range of plants kindly donated by members. If you want to try to ‘grow your own, why not have a rake through the hundreds of packets of seeds available at a very low price. Soup, sandwiches, bakes, tea and coffee are provided by the sports club.
The plant sales area will open at 1030 and the show just as soon as the judges finish their judging which will be as soon after 12 noon as possible.
Why not come along and enjoy your Saturday with us and then spend Sunday planting out your purchases?"
Seems like a great idea -

News from Carol Shaw in Nairn : Hall all set up this afternoon now the happy folk are staging their plants ready for judging tomorrow. The three nurseries are Ardfearn, Rumbling Bridge and Askival Alpines along with what looks like an exciting club stall... From experience I know the quality of the cakes is good so do come along!
Enjoy!!

Just received from David Shaw - news and photo of the Forrest Medal Plant at Nairn show - a lovely plant of
Benthamiella patagonica
grown by Francis and Margaret Higgins from Berriedale - Well done!!
I'm told they also had some other very good plants, including a beautiful pan of Pleiones - you may remember that they have done rather well at Perth , too....

Great to see the Higgins and their fine plants supporting the shows!

We had a fantastic Show and members and visitors really enjoyed themselves! Stan da Prato cake-walked Section I to gain the Highland Trophy for most points, the Askival Trophy for Best Bulb
Tulipa linifolia
and the Grouse Trophy for Best Ericaceous Plant
Rhododendron racemosum
. Francis and Margaret Higgins not only won the Forrest Medal but also the Weir Shield for Best Plant in Show from a Highland or Moray with the same plant and a Certificate of Merit for their
Erigeron aureus
Canary Bird. Whilst Graeme Butler of Rumbling Bridge Nursery was awarded the Culloden Cup for his
Primula x pubescens
Rumbling Bridge. Tina Finch received the Dunbarney Salver for her beautifully grown plant of
Primula scotica
, which impressed the judges so much they also awarded it a Certificate of Merit, she also received a Certificate of Merit for her
Ranunculus amplexicaulis
.
In Section II Colinne Souter was presented with the George Rosslyn Shirras Tankard for most points. Whilst Sue Mackintosh to the prize for Best Plant from a First Time Exhibitor with her
Lewisia cotyledion
hybrid.
The judges were impressed with the standard of plants on the bench and, considering we only had 17 exhibitors the Hall looked very floriferous!

As Carol has so promptly detailed the trophy winners all I have to do is add a few snaps! first the happy couple with their plant then their merit cert and then Graeme's primula named after his nursery.

By dint of bringing a lot of plants I received the trophy for most open points -the card is against the small six pan - as well as two others

Congratulations to all the winners and indeed every exhibitor at the show - and especially to Sue Mackintosh for the prize for Best Plant from a First Time Exhibitor with her Lewisia cotyledon hybrid.
David and Carol Shaw must have really enjoyed their supper this evening in the reflection of a good day!

Thanks to all involved with the show and for the pictures and notes here. Obviously a great display and it's good (for me) to see that spring will be coming eventually. To think that many years ago I had seed of the Benthemiella from a Flores and Watson collection - in the days when we were alllowed to have such things - but to my lasting sadness, none germinated. A super plant.

Really good show and the cakes oh meant to say the plants were lovely. Thanks everyone for making it a nice day out. Weather was lovely. Home with more plants that I no space for but that's another great thing about these shows so much little treasures that you must have.
See you all next year, it's always a lovely drive in such a wonderful part of the country. Also thanks Roma for keeping me company , bet you were glad of a quiet time when you got home. I think I talk to much.
