« on: February 26, 2008, 12:45:18 PM »
THE SCOTTISH ROCK GARDEN CLUB
75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS BEGIN FOR STUDENTS
As part of  its 75th Anniversary celebrations, the Scottish Rock Garden Club has announced that it is offering 75 free student memberships for 2008.
Founded in 1933, the Scottish Rock Garden Club is 75 in  2008, and is the biggest horticultural society in Scotland, with over 4000 members across the world.  Many of its members are former students of botany and horticulture, and the Club has decided to offer 75 free student memberships for this year, to help to foster an interest in rock gardening and alpine plants among the current crop of UK students.
To apply for free student membership, students may simply download a form from SRGC website and send it off. (This form is also shown here  but will also be available on the main site soon.)
SRGC President, Ian Christie, said “For many of our members, the interest in alpines and rock gardening was sparked in their student days.  By offering these free student memberships we hope to increase an interest in rock gardening in the next generation of gardeners, nurserymen and horticulturalists.

Just a note to say that on page 8 of the journal "The Rock Garden" No. 120, the contact for the Student Membership offer is given as Ian Bainbridge... this is incorrect, all applications to Julia at address above.
By the way, this is NOT one of the mistakes, deliberate or otherwise, which is part of Anton's Error Quiz for the champagne prize !! :-X

Maggi,
My darling gardening daughter (and student) was quite thrilled to hear about this---but is feeling very disappointed because:

She is only starting university this fall (so will not have her student card until then)---I am fairly certain that all the spots will be taken by that time???

so many species....so little time

While the Free Student Membership scheme is primarily aimed at current year's UK Students, I am told that all applications will be welcome and memberships may be awarded on consideration of individual circumstances.  8)

Does doing Italian at evening class count?

I must try this. :) Of course if I can. I am a foreign student. I thought about becoming a full member, but truly saying, I didn't feel any need to. Maybe this one year will change that. Maybe after that free year I will stay longer. :)

Kryztof, shame on you....
"I didn't feel any need to" ... how dare you  >:( ;D

I could think of a million good reasons to become a member - but it would take us too far if I started naming them ... ;D

Gilgemyn, you can count million good reasons, because you are a member. It is also very possible, that after one year of membership I will think the same. Let us hope so.

I only wanted to notice, that my mother informed me, that I have already got something from you. I cannot wait to get it in my hands and start reading. :) I was told, that it is a book. Wow, that was a real surprise.

Yes, Krystof. 2 good books a year, thats why most people who don't live in Scotland join. Us living here join for all the friends and good times we have at various events. Mind you a lot of overseas members come to the Autumn discussion weekend meeting and have a great time. See how many forum members you can spot in the book!
