I sit the plant in direct sunlight adjacent to a small vennel between the house and garage -the latter is in shadow. As the dynamic range of digital camera sensors is no match for that of the human eye exposing for the sunlit flower effectively blacks out the background removing any competing detail.
I use a Canon 7D mkII with an f2.8 image-stabilised 100mm macro lens. This image was taken at 800 ISO, 1/100s with the aperture closed down to the minimum f32 to maximise depth of field. The kit was hand-held. I may need to take 10-12 repeated images to get a decent one!
