Ranunculus ficaria cultivar

Hi all ,

I have bougth in last fall a plant from the german perennial association under the name :

Ranunculus ficaria 'Grandiflora'

Here are some pics ....
Now my question : knows anybody this cultivar ?
I suppose this is maybe not R. ficaria ....maybe it is a other species......
For comparison I made a pic with a other R. ficaria ( Aurantiaca )....

Any ideas ?

Never heard of it, I'm afraid, Hans, but then R. f. 'Brazen Hussey' is the one which romps around my garden - a true hussey, goes everywhere.

It is most likely Ranunculus ficaria ssp. chrysocephalus (syn. R. ficaria 'Major') from Greece, though if produces bulbils in it's leaf axils it could be ssp. ficariiformis from Southern Europe. Both are in trade under various names.

Hans, I'll try to take a photo of my Ranunc. ficaria 'Major' tomorrow if its flowers open in the cold weather that is forecast.

I find it seeds around just as much as the smaller R. ficaria varieties and I have to pull out seedlings to stop it spreading too much. Usually, I try to pull off the seed heads from my R. ficaria forms before they scatter, but I always miss some. I like its large flowers, but it does make a lot of large leaves too (though I find these, fresh pale green, leaves quite attractive at the start of the year).

I think mine does sometimes make small bulbils in the leaf axils. I will check.

This is the local form of Ranunculus ficaria of the Balearic Islands - I think it is very similar. Some have really nice foliage.
