Gentiana sp..
« on: August 16, 2016, 08:44:58 PM »
I got the seeds of this plant as Gentiana depressa, but in my opinion it's not.
Any help to identify this one is very welcome.

Definitely not depressa, sadly! I think cruciata is probably right.

I was wondering the same thing about my seedlings. Seed came from both SRGC and NARGS seed exchanges, and ended up being identical to what you show here. Thank you for the identification!

I wouldn't be so fast to proclaim it G. cruciata until further consideration. There are other Gentiana ssp. in the Sect. cruciata that can pass as cruciata, to mention just G. macrophylla.
If the provenience of seeds is known it would be easier to say; otherwise a look at the calyx and few other details...

Was this from the 2010/11 seed exchange or later.  I sowed seed of Gentiana depressa in January 2011 from SRGC and got this.  I did not grow it to flowering stage.  It was composted as soon as I realised it was not depressa.  I hope it is not still turning up under this name.

Thank you all for the replies.

If I google pictures of G. cruciata, I see often flowers all along the whole stem. My plants only have flowers on the top of the stem or just below.

If I google G. macrophylla, I read that that one flowers in August/September. My plants flowers in July. I'm in zone 6b, mostly a late start of spring.

The plants are on a rather dry spot in my garden. They are a bit floppy after flowering, but not as  as floppy as G. gracilipes.

I got the seeds in the SRGC seedexchange 2010/2011  or 2011/2012

Could it be willow gentian, G. asclepiadea.

I've passed a note to the Seed Team which I hope they will  check out and bear in mind for this year.

G. asclepiadea is something totally different.

And another note:

Gentiana gracilipes is a syn. of Gentiana dahurica for quite awhile and shouldn't be used anymore.

I was checking out some of my plants in my cold-frame this afternoon and noticed this plant which I think is some type of Gentiana sp.? It somehow sowed itself in a pot with a Lewisia cotyledon which is a bit of a mystery since I have never knowingly sowed it there. Does anyone have any idea what type of Gentiana it is? I think it may be some type of G. paradoxa or maybe a G. Sino-ornata. I've tried sowing both previously with no known success.549019-0549021-1549023-2549025-3

Lovely Gentiana paradoxa, Rob - or perhaps a hybrid - hard to say exactly since it is somewhat promiscuous.

Very nice gentian, Rob. Looks like Gentiana paradoxa from the photo and it's blooming the same time as mine.

Yes, you lucky man! G. paradoxa (or a hybrid, but nice narrow leaves).
