News from Ardfearn Nursery
« on: September 25, 2016, 06:00:05 PM »
Perhaps  the most northerly Scottish Alpine and Rock Garden Plant Nursery, Ardfearn overlooks the shore just north of Inverness.
Started by SRGC stalwart Jim Sutherland  - so long convenor of the Inverness Group - and familiar to so many over the years by Jim and Agnes setting up the Ardfearn stand at  so many SRGC Shows and  now under the  care of Jim and Agnes'  son Ali  - the  nursery is a popular one with SRGC members - not least because of the continued support of SRGC Shows by Ali and Sarah who can often be seen selling their wares at these events.

Sarah and Ali have been finalising what should be on their online alpine  catalogue - whilst their  catalogue is updated regularly, this is the time of year that they do our most extensive stockcheck. As our growing season starts to slow down, they finally have more time to take stock of everything :-)  A few eagle-eyed customers noticed that several new crackers were added at weekend, with plenty more beauties to be added in the next few days...Shortia uniflora kantoense, Anemonella thalictroides Schoaf's double, Reum alexandre, Ranunculus lyalii, Primula aureata and lots, and lots more coming as soon as possible, I'm told!
A small selection of this year's alpines happily growing in one of Ardfearn's many Efford capillary sand-beds.

This may not look much at the moment, but it's a pot-full of  their Rheum alexandre - they were delighted to hear earlier in the year that SRGC had submitted this to be considered for an AGM (Award of Garden Merit), after the parent plant was used in the SRGC  award-winning display for Gardening Scotland 2016 :-)

More pix from Sarah at Ardfearn

This is one I must order...  Phylliopsis 'Mermaid' flowering for the second time this year I believe...

A wee late visitor enjoying Gentiana sino-ornata hybrids (not bad for the end of September in the Scottish Highlands!)

Hi Maggi,

the Ardfearn Nursery I know only since this year and I can only report good.

They have a great selection, the service is perfect and the plants are in fantastic condition. I will buy in the future there.

Sarah and Ali are very nice ... we had a few emails and I had to give the honor to some plants from me.

Just an example ... Nassauvia gaudichaudii (Falkland Islands) ... you never get in Germany ... but with Sarah and Ali.

PS.
Sarah and Ali ... you should read the ... please reserved 2 copies of Ranunculus lyallii for me. For the next spring.

Greetings from Chemnitz / Saxony

Thomas

Sorry Maggi, I should have been clearer, I meant pictures in the Ardfearn catalogue.

oops!  Sorry!   Well, I've just had a better look myself at the cataloge and yes, there do seem to be quite a number of plants without photos  -  I'll message  Ali and Sarah and ask them.

I've heard back from Sarah - she's been working on the website quite a bit so that may be the  issue - but  she also says she's aware that time constraints have prevented them getting a lot of new photos taken and loaded.

Good idea to search here, or use  Google, if there's something that is missing a pic - I can certainly vouch for their plants!

Cheers Maggi, I'm glad it wasn't a browser problem. Good catalogue.

News from Ardfearn - www.ardfearn-nursery.co.uk
Ali and  Sarah  have  decided  to withdraw  from the  SRGC shows they were  planning to attend  this  season.
They  have  the  care  of  vulnerable  parents  to consider  and  have  come to the  conclusion that the  risk is  not  acceptable. Happily, the  nursery  does  offer  mail order  and  hopes  customers  will  support  that part  of their  operation.

Whether  or  not  nurseries  decide  to withdraw from any  events, or  the  events  themselves  are  cancelled, please  bear in mind  that  these  specialist  nurseries  do not  have  an easy  time  of  business  at the  best  of  times, and  many  will  lose  substantial percentages  of their  income because of this  situation, as  I have  just  been reading  about  on social media  from Tonkin's  Nursery  in  Australia.  Without  these  nurseries  we  would also lose  out in a  major  fashion as  hobby  growers  - saving the  nurseries  is  definitely  in our  own interest! A couple  of  nurseries  expected  to attend  the  Kendal Show  today also pulled  out - this  will be happening  everywhere in the  next  while.
Be  kind-  use  mail order  where  you  can!

Handy  list .....  ....http://files.srgc.net/journals/NurseryListSRGC.pdf
