Types of Gentiana seeds and their corresponding species
« on: September 21, 2016, 06:26:55 PM »

Those looking at the last Gentiana seed images  HERE will notice the resemblance between G. cachemirica and G. septemfida var. lagodechiana seeds.
When I first took pictures I started to have doubts and wonder if what I have is indeed G. cachemirica. Looking around I found this article, which besides that it clarified my doubts, also shows the importance of recording morphological details. Modern analysis techniques may confirm the findings later.

CAN THE SECTIONAL POSITION OF GENTIANA CACHEMIRICA BE CLARIFIED BY A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF ITS MORPHOLOGY? - N. DAVITASHVILI & G. KARRER
http://www.academia.edu/7721205/CAN_THE_SECTIONAL_POSITION_OF_GENTIANA_CACHEMIRICA_BE_CLARIFIED_BY_A_DETAILED_ANALYSIS_OF_ITS_MORPHOLOGY

Just a short quote with highlights: “Smith (1961) speculated about close affinities between Gentiana cachemirica and the eastern Caucasian populations of G. septemfida. The latter species is extremely variable and includes several subspecies growing in rather different habitat types, including alpine and upper forest belt pastures, and rocky crevices from 500 up to 2400 m above sea level (Dolukhanov, 1948; Grossheim, 1952, 1967; Kolakovsky, 1978; Gagnidze, 1985; Davitashvili & Karrer, 2006). Apparently the hypothesis of Smith (1961) was based on ecological and gross morphological data. Both Gentiana cachemirica and G. septemfida subsp. lagodechiana Kolak. grow on moist rocky ledges and are characterized by ovate leaves and fimbriate plicae (characters 6, 16 in Fig. 4A) and the present morphological and phylogenetic cluster analyses confirm his suggestion.”

This is to encourage everyone to take pictures of seeds; even if they qualify as ‘gross morphological data’ ;D , they are still important and can be used to ID and/or clarify species in some cases.

Types of Gentiana seeds and their corresponding species

A small project of mine regarding the identification of various groups of Gentiana after their seeds characters in a fast and simple way.

Please note that this classification can only be used to determine rapidly the group of species to which your gentian belongs, not to identify particular species.
For the blue highlights species there are images posted in the forum – type the name in the Search feature, preferably the left upper side forum search, and then choose the Seed Exchange topic (depending on the image resolution, some characters may not be visible).

http://files.srgc.net/general/Gentiana-seed-types-GabrielaCostea.pdf

Some may find it useful; for ex. ‘problem species’ that are sent repeatedly for Seedex under a wrong name can be easily verified if they at least belong to the group with which they share the same seed characters.

The pdf #2 is an annotated list with all the Gentiana seeds images posted in the forum, up to this date.

Thank you Maggi for the help :)

Great to see them all in one place! Already quite a large Gentiana seeds library - now we need more images!
