Plant ID needed please
« on: October 16, 2016, 12:42:38 PM »

I've been asked about this 8ft tall plant. At first glance it looked like chicory but the leaves and inflorescence aren't right.

It can be something in the Lactuca/Mulgedium or more likely a Cicerbita. The pictures are a bit deceiving not showing the basal leaves.

Thank you, Gabriela. Great identification.  It looks like Cicerbita plumieri. https://www.rightplants4me.co.uk/content/plant?PlantID=1579&LatinName=Cicerbita%20plumieri

Do you agree?

The pictures on that website are really fuzzy Margaret. I googled for Cicerbita plumieri - shown in the wild, see below, and it doesn't quite fit with your plant. But maybe you have more picture to see details.

Definitely not Cicerbita plumieri. It grows in the wild around here. Stem upper leaves are lobed, even if less than basal ones, but still clearly lobed, and I cannot remember seing them so nicely arranged. All in all, C.plumieri is a rather acceptable plant when flowering, but otherwise nothing really beautiful or garden worth.

Thank you Gabriela and Philippe.  Cicerbita bourgaei sounds exactly right - no lobes on upper leaves and the 3m height. Great.
