A fine stand of L.superbum at Evenley Wood.

I just checked out the plant list (http://www.evenleywoodgarden.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Plant-Inventory.pdf) on the Evenly Wood website (have to admit it was previously unknown to me).  They have an impressive list of lilies (and fritillaries, and magnolia, and ...). Definitely on my list of places to visit.

This Lilium auratum became a bit brutish and had to be caged.

Moin!
I live in East Frisia in Northern Germany very close to the North Sea.
Today I’d like to introduce you to the Lilium primulinum var. burmanicum. I got this lily from Chen Yi in 2008 and I’d like to multiply it. In order to do that I need another lily or pollen so that this time it won’t turn out like the gloriosoides. Could somebody help me with that?
I got the gloriosoides in 2013. The first blossom appeared in 2014. In 2015 there were four blossoms and in 2016 even six. Two blossoms were pollinated by me – I got the pollen from Axel. Two seed vessels were formed but unfortunately the seed was dead.
This year in 2017 the temperature in March was comparable to the ususal temperature in May. Therefore, a lot of my plants including my lilies sprouted three weeks before they ususally do. The actual problem started in April of this year: Lots of rain, chilly and icy wind and even frost sometimes. I was able to save some scales of the gloriosoides. I’ll see how they will turn out in fall.

Greetings,
Sigi

Trying to lift some young Lilium henryi yesterday I did not get the fork down far enough and I separated the bulbs from the stem, because the ground was very dry and rock hard. The bulbs when eventually lifted were fine, but is there any chance the stems with their roots will produce any more bulbils, now I have replanted them? Nothing to lose of course and I soaked the soil to give them a chance. I am not talking of the large mature stems I showed recently, just 30-40 cm high plants.
I was surprised that the small finger nail sized offsets produced good small apple sized bulbs in 2 seasons. Several of them flowered this summer with just 1 or 2 blooms per stem. I need to move my mature clump so expect I will have more offsets to grow on soon.

Has anyone seen this before with Lilium martagon? I have some mutant flowers, but the same plant flowered normally last year...  :-\

Re: Lilium henryi stems.

With luck. Laying L. candidum stems into a shallow horizontal trench was recognised as a means of vegetative propagation back in the deep time of long ago.

Some late-flowering lilies.

The first two were in flower in late September and into the start of this month.

Lilium primulinum burmanicum

Lilium primulinum “Rock’s variety”

Lilium sulphureum -I have three mature bulbs of this species in flower now. One is particularly yellow.

Hello, Steve,
these are great pictures.
I'd be on pollen from L. primulinum burmanicum,
L. primulinum "Rock's variety" and L. sulphureum (or Stamm Bulbillen).
At the moment I could offer you seeds of L. monadelphum and pollen from L. primulinum burmanicum.

Hallo Sigi,
Pollen from primulinum burmanicum and Rock’s var will have to wait until next year.
Stem bulbils from the yellow sulphureum might be possible once the plant dies back.
I am going off on holiday shortly but will check when I return (early November).
Best,
Steve

I have seedlings of L. columbianum appearing (plus a solitary L. washingtonianum)
The seed was planted on 21.02.2017, and it seems that the combination of a few months of cool weather back in spring and the last few weeks of cooler autumnal weather has been enough to get them germinating.
I was expecting that they'd appear next spring, when I would have left them to their own devices. As they are a "little bit" out of synch, I have a number of options:
- leave them to their own devices (it will get colder and gloomier, down to 2-4 °C)
- cold frame (it will get colder, 2-4 °C, but plenty of sunshine)
- in my cellar under lights (12-16 °C)
- spare bedroom under lights (18-20 °C)

Any advice will be very welcome.

You may remember I posted "Lilium henryi" after one had been decapitated by the wind.
594993-0
I dug them up the other day to move the group of originally 3 bulbs.
594995-1
Quite a weight together. The label is ~4 inches. With the larger split in 2. (A foot rule)
594997-2
Plus lots of bits too. I dug a shallow trench in the garden and laid out the very large stems to see if they produce any stem bulbils. The larger clump included the beheaded plant but can't imagine it bulked up the remaining bulb that quickly. They are now in a more open position so may grow upright.
