Hi Brian,
   Hard to tell at that distance, but I think ‘Glouscester Old Spot’ tends to be more glabrous, and the spots more distinct…. I’d hazard a guess at ‘Oxford Sandy and Black’.

Not meaning to be rude, David, but what does 'Ronald Frank' have going for it?  The flowers look ordinary enough so perhaps it is an unusual species or comes from an unusual locale?

Not meaning to be rude, David, but what does 'Ronald Frank' have going for it?  The flowers look ordinary enough so perhaps it is an unusual species or comes from an unusual locale?

Good question, I think we probably know you well enough to know that you were not meaning to be rude!  I picked a flower (sacrilige) and have been carrying it round the garden trying to find a match amongst the hundreds that we grow.  I bought it at the Mid Anglia Bulb Sale in 2013 never having heard of it before, and on subsequently asking Rod Leeds about it found that he had done the same but didn't know any more.  I meant to ask him on Saturday if he had found anything about it but forgot! 

There is nothing to match it at the moment.  The nearest I can get is perhaps 'Marjorie Brown' but the colour and shape of the inner mark are different and the foliage much more substantial on 'Ronald Frank' when it is in flower. It is a good substantial snowdrop although, as you imply, not looking terribly different on a photograph.

You probably know that it was named for Ronald Frank a past chairman of the Sussex Group of the AGS in the 1980s and a founder of the Cyclamen and Fritillary Groups of the AGS so was probably named in  memory of him by someone who knew him.  If anyone can throw light on its origins we would be delighted to know more.

The snow is finally melting and behold, this G. plicatus byzantinus X Lewis Palmer Garden appeared today.

Morning patrol in the sunshine ahead of Doris, today the 'Green Machine' in full flow:

First up Andy Byfield's G.g. Andrea's Fault, a striking dark green inner and lovely shape. Andrea's certainly has the darkest green inner. I know Andy is planning to release this drop in the near future.

Next up, another of Andy's G.e. Morgana, my all-comers personal favourite snowdrop and a real stunner. Clumping nicely in both clumps, it is a very good vigorous garden plant.

Then Rosemary Burnham, a classic but easily holding her own amongst the newcomers! Slower to establish than the other two but well worth it.

In my view the three very best virescents by a long way!
