Gardening Scotland Show - 2nd -4th June 2017
« on: April 24, 2017, 12:06:45 PM »
GARDENING SCOTLAND
The SRGC is building its own stand again this year. Help is needed in setting up the stand, loaning plants and shrubs and being present at the actual event to sell seed, talk to visitors and generally promote the Scottish Rock Garden Club.
The Show itself runs from 2nd to 4th June , but of course help is needed in the run-up to the show as well.Any help  you can offer will be gratefully received.

For further information please contact Richard Green 01360 440701 treasurer@srgc.net

Some of the 2016 team are not available this year and as those who were at any of the shows   may have noticed I have a mobility problem. We have had to go for a smaller stand.  The reduced stand means we can start later than in the past. Two big free standing wooden boxes from  the set of  three used in earlier years have been checked over by  Rob Graham and  will  get  to the show ground by Tuesday. On Wednesday 31st we will set up the display so anyone who wants to help, contribute a plant or two and who hasn't yet been contacted should arrive that morning.  Ian Christie is bringing the bulk of the  plants. A series of fish box troughs are being filled by Sandy Leven who will bring them to the hall on Wednesday. Trina Rogerson and I will label again.  On Thursday 1st June, Carole and Ian Bainbridge will lead the customary final tidy. Richard Green is organising the members who will man/woman the stand on the three days the show is open to the public. On Sunday evening it should be much easier to dismantle than before.

Stan, I hope all SRGC members feel as I do - that we are immensely grateful for all the work the GS Show Team has put in over so many years - to such great effect - and will be pleased that we are able to mount any display to delight the public as usual, regardless of size. (Which isn't everything, as we all know!)

I send my best wishes to all involved in the display and communicating with the public. I hope there will be a good number who see the display who will be  moved to join the Club to learn more about these fascinating plants. As usual at this time of year, there is, of course the  chance for those joining as postal members to  have their subscription run until October 2018, which is a great "deal" in anyone's  language, let alone taking into account all the great resources provided by the Club via the groups and,  for free, on the website.

The very warm weather here in Aberdeen seems to be changing to cooler and very windy - who knows what it will be  for the show - good enough to entice out lots of visitors, I hope!
Good luck!!

Picture from Richard Green at the set-up for the  wee SRGC display at GS - Trina labelling with Ian Christie and  Stan da Prato- who is on crutches and so much restricted in what he can do. Still there, though. bless him!

More snaps. The two blue boxes installed by Rob then repainted  by Richard  and Sandy  gradually filled with plants by Ian   who brought many of them  and top dressed by Richard. One is a  woodland mossy  habitat  the other sunny and gravelly. Trina sorted  out our  labels  while  Peggy did  a lot of work adding moss around the plants. Sandy has made a series  of excellent  troughs which  will go on the  other part  of the stand tomorrow -each  has  a theme eg miniature  hostas, dwarf ferns, lewisias, sempervivums etc.

Trina Rogerson has been making a great job of the plant labels for the SRGC displays at GS for quite a few years now. Peggy Anderson, former SRGC Hon. Treasurer, is another who has helped out for  ages - and  Richard Green, present Hon. Treasurer for the Club is involved too. Stan da Prato,  Rob Graham and Ian Christie are  ever present with these things - more members will be involved as the show progresses.  Sandy Leven's trough already look good - just sitting about the place!  What a lot of work, even for a pared down size of display like this years -  I'm so proud of all of these great folks  doing this superb work!

Brian Cunningham talking  to camera  at the SRGC stand this morning. This week the Beechgrove programme goes out on Friday not Thursday. Richard and Peggy  continued  to finalise the stand  joined by  Carole and Ian Bainbridge.  Sandy's series of troughs  look very smart on the black background of the second part of our stand each with one of his informative labels. snaps in a moment
