Disappointed to see the Great Comp site advertising its snowdrop event ("Snowdrop Sensation") with these words:
"Galanthophiles’ or snowdrop collectors, are among the most competitive varieties of plant nuts – some will stop at nothing to get hold of a rare bulb; even stealing from other galanthophiles isn’t ruled out.

Not acceptable.

Call me old-fashioned, but speaking as someone who has had snowdrops stolen in the past, how is it acceptable for a website to appear to be condoning such behaviour by endorsing it? 

Hard to credit they wrote that- counterproductive at the very least  - very silly to do so.

Everything’s looking fabulous at The Garden House, lots of work has been done getting everything labelled and shipshape. The season is advanced down here, hence the extra weekend being put on. All volunteer run this year again.

There is a snowdrop event at the St. Andrews Botanic Garden - on the 10th Feb, starts at 10am in the herbarium. Finishes at 1.30pm with lunch in the glass class. Tickets can be booked at info@standrewsbotanic.org

I went along to the snowdrop event at Harvey's Garden Plants today.  The weather was miserable, cold and grey, drizzling whilst we stood in the queue then raining thereafter.  It was pretty quiet at the start with the queue half its usual length or less.  This meant that those who came early to get something that was in short supply must have had something of a field day.  I saw quite a few old friends but missed seeing some others and many who came early disappeared off quickly, presumably to zoom over to the other event that was 45 minutes drive away.  Steve Owen did the opposite and I was able to chat to him for a while in the restaurant whilst he had his breakfast.

Snowdrops new (to me) from Glen Chantry included 'Wol Staines' [GC18] (pictured in the Yearbook 2017) and 'Essex Girl', both of which sold out before I laid eyes on them.  Another was 'Scrooge' [GC16], an early snowdrop with a 'face'.  The snowdrop that we learned this year is 'PHD33463' they listed as such, similarly 'Emerald Hughes'.

Roger Harvey was selling one called 'Snoopy Eyes'.  Is that the new name for Ian Christie's 'Snoopy' or has a mistake crept in?

John Foster had a couple of pots of Tim Ingram's 'Copton Trym' on sale; going rather too cheaply I thought.

I had a little chat with Paul Barney and Michael Broadhurst about a double snowdrop called 'Rodmarton', of which there would seem to be several forms in circulation. 

There were still people milling around when I left at 12:15; not everyone feels compelled to turn-up early to this event.  But I left still thinking that the best interests of galanthophiles were not being served by having two nearby events scheduled at exactly the same time.

We ventured forth from the balmy south coast and made a two day break of it, visiting Anglesey Abbey on Friday and Harvey’s on Saturday.  We enjoyed Anglesey Abbey hugely - our first visit - and in beautiful winter sunshine.  My wife enjoyed the coffee and magazines in Harvey’s cafe while I queued in the drizzle. There was a very nice atmosphere and much blunter elbows than at Myddleton!  There was time and space to have a good look although a couple of snowdrops on my mental list had gone when I returned to the stall. I was pleased with my purchases though and enjoyed myself.
I should have introduced myself to you Alan but couldn’t be certain until I was back online and checked your photo. Sorry about that.
