Autumn flowering narcissus (NH)
« on: September 24, 2017, 11:39:30 AM »
A first contribution to this theme was sent by Yann at September 19th (Narcissus cavanillesii) in Narcissus September 2017.

Here are my first autumn flowers -
a special coloured Narcissus miniatus (obsoletus), of Israeli origin (with best thanks to the donor).
The last photo (from 2009) shows the colouration of an own plant, found in Spain.

Narcissus tazettus starts here to flower, much earlier than ever.

Very interesting Stefan!
When does this provenance (from Gargano/Italy?) flower normally?

I can't say. First they flowered around Christmas, next winter in March and now the first are starting in September.

Thank you Stefan! I had a similar experience with Narcissus papyraceus from Southern Spain, which at one occasion flowers in October but after that never again.

This is Narcissus cavanillesii - most probably the subspecies mauretanicus

- flowering more reliably than plants of Spanish origin

Gerd

I have seen further flowering stems today that will come into flower during the following weeks.

Very nice and unusual Narcissus these cavanillesii.

Hi Gerd,
I see on Daffnet  ( http://daffnet.org/narcissus-x-xanthochlorus/ ) that N. x xanthochlorus (N. cavanilesiix N. viridiflorus) could be fertile.
Have you any experience of this?
cheers

Hi Fermi,
- unfortunately not! I received a few bulbs of this cross from its 'creator' but I had no seedset. This is most probably caused by our  weather conditions here with too low temperatures for the development of seeds.
This species has a tendency for splitting, so flowers are rare. With some luck I'll have one flowering plant this season and so there will be a chance for a new test.
