idea for shrubs ?
« on: October 19, 2017, 07:23:56 AM »
I know that the topic does not really belong in this forum, but I hope that I can still get some ideas here.
My perennials focus on China. I am now looking for interesting shrubs with a height of about 1-1,5 m. I already have tree peonies, the many beautiful rhododendrons that I have seen in China do not go unfortunately because my garden soil is chalky (gravel, clay, lime).  Further the climate here is very cold at 800 NN (late frost und snow - some years in June) and the summers are wet. From magnolias I have, after all, brought Magnolia stellata halfway through (rising late and seems to have gotten stuck with the ground). If there were rhododendrons that could handle the soil, it would be perfect: -)? no hybrids.
Maybe someone knows a nursery or forum where I can continue searching?
Thank you very much!

Have you thought of daphnes? They don't grow too big and there are plenty from China.

Daphnes are brilliant but what about Ceratostigma for pure blue flowers now (in my garden these are visited by hummingbird hawk moths), or a Caryopteris or the Korean lilac if you don't mind leaving China; Syringa meyeri 'Palibin', or even a dwarf Forsythia, if you are not adverse to spring yellows, eg. 'Maree d'Or'...

Pan Global Plants is a good source of shrubs of known wild source (many are from China). See here: http://www.panglobalplants.com.

Have you thought of Deutzia? Lots of those from China, Deutzia calycosa 'Dali' is a nice one sold through this nursery.
