Roscoea roots

Just been digging up and trying to split up clumps of various Roscoea. Out of interest, are the 'tubers' like Dahlia ones and need a piece of stem to be able to grow or do they have a growth point at the top?

My experience is that you need a bit of the stem when you divide to get success.
Careful cutting through the small stem shoot with a sharp knife or scalpel so you leave a bit on every root is the way. I have tried to grow on bits of roots that got  broken off without success.
