Sources for videos on rock gardens, alpine plants etc
« on: November 29, 2017, 01:19:38 PM »
This thread is for members to post links to  sites where videos  about  rock garden and alpine plants and bulbs, rock gardens and so on -  basically  subjects which may be of interest and  information to us here.

Firstly, here are some links from Forumists' and Members' site ..... ......

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpLSJ9GmDtJMTdMo3nUWqWg     Ian Young's video channel

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMDAaTWbeQBTu9EfYuZ355g     Jan Tholhuijsen's videos of  his garden and projects.

https://www.youtube.com/user/MountainFlora/videos    David Sellars' videos from Europe and North American nature   ( www.mountainflora.ca )

https://www.wrightmanalpines.com/-  The Wrightman nursery site  includes  videos from the late Harvey Wrightman, including  practical vidoes  with Joseph Halda building  crevice gardens.

It is worth bearing in mind that online searches - either using one of the big search engines like google  or  direct links on sites such as www.youtube.com or https://vimeo.com/ can bring up a huge range of possibilities -  direct your search in different ways, searching say for -   Rock Gardens - or  - Trough making to be presented with a  great range of  videos. Amusingly, in a trough  making or lightweight trough or   trough search  many videos will be found from around the world - many using the SRGC methods!

If I can continue with this,

The fish box troughs from Ian, summarized in an E-book, can be downloaded in PDF.

Zahrada
Magazín pro milovníky zahrad a zahradničení

In the Czech magazine 'Zahrada' there is a section 'SKALNIČKOVÁ ZAHRADA' (rock gardens).

Beautiful rock gardens for inspiration.

If you use Google, there is a Translation module button in the upper right corner.( See image 2)

It may be that this button is not present with you.
Then click on the 3 points in the top right corner.
Then on settings.
Then at the bottom of the page on Advanced.
Scroll down, up to Languages.
Click on your language.
Then you get at the bottom 'Offer to translate pages that are in a language unknown to you'
Activate this button.

This from your link Jan

"Soil mix for alpines is the subject of endless debate. All manner of exotic substances are advocated, from crushed oyster shells to pulverized yak dung. (Here the alpine purist insists upon the real stuff from Upper Dehra Dun, not the inferior Nepalese product.) Oyster shell is considered a sure fire corrective for the notoriously non-flowering Aquilegia jonesii from the high dolomite screes of Montana, while yak dung is reputed to alleviate debilitating attacks of the vapors in choice Himalayan primulas."

Worth the hit for that alone. Some wonderful trough porn there too.

 :)

You're right, Ross, everyone does it his way. More or less successful. But of course there are various mixes for different plants. Draining, richer, poorer, acidic, calcareous, etc.

An instructive lecture and a crevice under construction. From Kenton J. Seth. Put it to your favorites and take time to see and listen to it. He takes 1.5 hours, but well worth it. With full screen it is as if you are there.
