I just need to persuade the wife   :) - if its Scotland its going to be sealed bids so I can see it going for a lot more than that

Good news about the future of Cally Gardens -  it has been bought by  Kevin Hughes and  should have a great future -  much to the relief of all who worried it may be lost after the death of Michael Wickenden and the sale of the property.

Kevin Hughes, ecologist and plantsman

In spite of  long and successful work on the Dartford Warbler,  Kevin turned to  horticulture, working for seven years as head gardener on a private estate.
Kevin then spent more than nine years renovating, restoring and then running Spinners Garden and Nursery, where he held a national collection of trilliums. In 2004, he set up his own nursery, Kevin Hughes’ Plants at Heale Garden near Salisbury, which specialised in rare and unusual hardy trees, shrubs (especially magnolias), herbaceous plants, climbers, and, of course, trilliums.

Kevin is  enthusiastic about the introduction of new plants to British gardens and does go on  plant hunting trips - but never indulges in the commercial harvesting of wild plants.
He is also familiar to many from his talks and  from his  appearances at rare plant fairs.

(cv details taken from KH  profile for Klinta Conference, Sweden 2017)

Good luck in this exciting venture, Kevin!

I’m delighted, such a legacy, would have been tragic for it to be lost ....

Quote from Cally Gardens ' Facebook Page :   "Well Cally Gardens is now under the ownership of Kevin Hughes. The gardens will be re-opening again on Thursday 17th May, Kevin has some great plans and ideas for the garden, vinery and woodlands, building on Michael's legacy and continuing to specialise in rare and unusual plants, so we are all looking forward to the next chapter in Cally Gardens story"

Good news!  Good luck to Kevin and his team!

Quoted from  RCHS blog .....

From the 17th May 2018, Cally Gardens at Gatehouse of Fleet will be open under the ownership of Kevin Hughes.  Kevin is a great nurseryman and it is so exciting (and a relief) that someone of his knowledge and passion for plants has taken over this plantsmans paradise.

Kevin worked many years ago at Spinners nursery.  He has a passion for trees shrubs and herbaceous plants.  He will also be bringing to Cally Gardens his collection of Magnolias as well as introducing lots of new and fresh ideas.

Many of Michael Wickenden’s introductions will remain in the nursery and much work has to be done to restore the neglect of the past few years.  Entry to the gardens  is  £3.50 per adult - and  Kevin will have a donations box to help with the repairs, especially to the storm damaged greenhouse.

Do take time to go to Cally Gardens. It is well worth a visit.

The new opening times from the 17th of May are:

Thursdays and Fridays – 2pm till 5pm

Saturday and Sunday – 10am till 5pm

Phone number: 07720718671

A plea from Kevin Hughes at Cally Gardens .....

Could you spare a morning or afternoon to help Cally Gardens?

Kevin Hughes, the new custodian and the staff and volunteers of the world renowned Cally Gardens are calling for help to get the gardens ready to open for the 2019 season.

If you like meeting people, being outdoors and enjoy flora and fauna then you will love a few hours at Cally!

Come along for a morning or afternoon (or both)  SAT, 23 FEB AND 3 MORE dates, lunch will be served from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. No experience required - just bring suitable footwear and clothing.

The walled gardens which are a treasure trove of exotic and rare hardy plants are in the process of being restored and refreshed and plans are commencing to repair and restore the damaged glasshouses to their Victorian splendour. As well as the Walled Garden and Glasshouses the team have yet to start into the acres of wider gardens and the enchanting woodland gardens.

With so much to do then the Cally team are stretched and the challenge of running a famous plant collection organically adds it's pressures.

We do hope that you can join us and to find out more then please email info@callygardens.co.uk or call us on 07951 070444.
