Dryad Nursery - more Galanthus Info
« on: January 29, 2018, 02:31:24 PM »
Following all the messages and comments about Galanthus Dryad Venus, our new inverse poculiform, I am very pleased to say that we have just one bulb to offer on ebay. The flower is just opening and it is a double-nosed bulb. I'm sorry we don't have more to offer, but it will be a year or two before the chipped bulblets will flower and we will know whether they are true to form. We would never sell unflowered chipped bulbs of an inverse poculiform. I am therefore offering one of my very few divisions of the original seedling. It is such a long process to get from the seed to the sale!
The photo is of the plant that will be offered.

Some stunning snowdrops with 'Kullake' looking particularly good. I like the way you display them, Anne, in a clump within a pot and the measure alongside.

Excellent news Anne, I am delighted with my Estonian Spirit 2009/CS9 (See Photo). Kaina and Kullake, will be great to add to them.

Interesting trend developing between those who name everything that has apparent difference, leading to product dilution and those reserving names for the very best and thus increasing product strength and brand. Choppy times ahead.

IRG98 of February 2018 presents  plants from the Chilean garden of John and Anita Watson,  tips from Ian Young  on how to landscape a trough and  finally this month there is the description from Anne Wright of a new Galanthus hybrid, G. ‘Dryad Venus’.

If you buy a snowdrop you could buy on "brand".  I'm afraid Anne's Dryad and Estonian Spirit snowdrops have yet to fall into my price range, no matter the brand.  But I think it would be better if we made considered judgements based on personal appeal, suitability for the garden, affordability; factors that are unique to each individual.
Almost in Scotland.

It's always good when plants are available in sufficient quantities to allow them to be sold at a price many  can afford but I, for one, even though most of the new drops  coming along are beyond my purse, like to see that there are those being bred and  trialled  thoroughly before  being released - this is the thorough development I see Anne processing and for which I applaud her.
I also enjoy that Anne is so open with us, sharing any news and the  work she is doing.

You have given an excellent description of Product life-cycle management Maggi, another key part of marketing.

No clearer statement of the paucity of marketing understanding in the snowdrop community can be made than the notion that a member of an identified market segment cannot afford a drop 'in spite' of brand! What they actually mean is that they are outside the target market because of brand/product marketing. Snowdrop marketing is no different from any other product marketing, the same topics need  managing, including demand in all it's facets, the issue is knowing what they are and optimising them.

Anne is incredibly successful and clearly manages all aspects of marketing extremely well. Indeed, it was recently remarked that running a successful Ebay listing was 'doing an Anne Wright'! I am going out on a limb here, but I suspect branding had an impact on that statement.

.... and the most important part of  branding for the long term, in my opinion,  is the quality.

I need some help with this. Is the brand ‘nivalis’ /‘plicatus’/‘elwesii’ etc? Or maybe ‘yellows’/‘pocs’/‘inverse pocs’/‘virescents’? Or groups like hiemalis, whittalii? Or individual cultivars? Or snowdrops from particular sources such as the Dryad series? Or from a particular grower? How do people see it?
Individual cultivars within all these examples can vary a good deal in reliability and vigour. I’m thinking aloud... somebody help!
