Nerine 'Afterglow'

Amazing Nerines, Ralph. I particularly like 'Afterglow' and 'Wolsey'. Must see if I can find a retailer for them. Before I got the 'bulb bug' proper, I tried N. sarniensis but never got a flower out of it. Are  these red Nerines easier to flower?


I grow 1 Nerine under cold glass, N. 'Zeal Giant', and it is now bulking up nicely. I've got 4 flower scapes on the plant  6(?) years after purchase.



And another one in a pot is N. undulata. Never know if that is the proper name for it.

A busy Nerine season here, about 50 oir more of Sir Peter Smithers' crosses are flowering.  Many do so for the first time.

1. Nerine 1st Seedlings - largest bulbs SPS-X6 with  Nerine PS-08-04 'David Lionel' x 'Hotspur' the purple in the right fore corner.
2. Nerine PS-01-01   {['Durru Shehvar'  x ('Belladonna' x 'Stephanie')-26425a]  x  (Mrs. Cooper x Victor')-25504b}, with 
3. Nerine PS-10-12 [('Tibet' x ('Wavebush' x 'Foudroyant')-27320b)]-30707 small

They all seem to be about a month late this year as the heat really did not abate until September.

Nerine bowdenii. This is reputed to be the true species, with bulbs grown from seeds collected by Tom Mitchell.

Join the Nerine and Amaryllid Society. They have a twice yearly bulb exchange, which is where most of mine came from.

I'm sure there is a regime which will ensure maximum flower production, but I haven't mastered it yet. Some of my N. sarniensis cultivars flower, but the majority just produce leaves. Maybe they need more time to reach flowering size. It's the same with the N. bowdenii cultivars. The smaller species such as N. humilis are more reliable flowerers for me.

I am happy that it has been frost free now and hope for some more time without frost.
The Nerine has now almost all of the flowers opened
I only remember to take photos in the evening but became ok anyway

Nerine 'Elegance' flowering in a pot here. Camera doesn't really record the shade accurately - it is a very intense Barbie-pink. I also have a couple of bowdenii 'Alba' flowering against a brick wall but the rest of my potted plants have decided not to flower which surprised me after the hot summer we have had.
