Strange looking ericaceous plant

A friend sent me a picture of a plant which she found on a hike in the Dolomites. It grew on limestone with
Rhododendron hirsutum and Rhodothamnus chamaecistus nearby. Our question is: Are there any hybrids 
described or what can it be otherwise? I would be grateful for any comment from the experts.

Oh my word!  How extraordinary- never seen such a thing. It would be so exciting it is is a hybrid. It's exciting no matter what it is!
