Fungus

Anyone put a name to this for me?

This is a Rollrim Paxillus involutus (recently split into several species).

Because it's old it's not showing a more typical shape. As fungi age the caps grow outwards and upwards giving the appearance of a funnel (Tricholomataceae), but you can still see the rolled edge to the cap and the dense gill structure.

Thank you. A nice poisonous fungus from the garden. Odd that it is described as a woodland species, especially on Birch on acid heathland. These were in grass, in neutral soil and not a birch in  sight.

One of the reasons it has been split into several species is the habitat requirement, but microscopy is required to sort them.

Still, many thanks. We seem to be getting a lot of different fungus coming up this year. Not complaining about the Giant puffballs though!
