Narcissus identification
« on: April 23, 2008, 09:15:08 PM »
I purchased both N.'Segovia' and N. 'Yellow Xit' from 'the usual sources', and they are both flowering now.

They appear to be  identical, has any forum member grown them together and is there a difference?

Thanks Anne,
I had checked them on daffseek and as they looked so similar in pictures wondered how they compared in 'real life'.

In other words had I purchased two different narcissus or two the same!

Alan,
While I was at the Conn. Collection today I was just able to make
pict. (before the rain came )of the Narcissus, you are not sure having the right ones
Therefore they are not so good but you might see the differences.
Segovia is much bigger than Xit.
I hope this is helpful to you?

Luit,
 Thanks for the comparison photos.
Do you mean taller or the flower bigger?
Unfortunately both of my plants have the same size flower and are identical in height.

This from the RHS Narcissus register:
 Segovia :

"Fl. 50 mm wide; perianth segments very broadly ovate, blunt, prominently mucronate, a little reflexed, plane or with margins somewhat incurving, overlapping one-third to a half; the inner segments more narrowly ovate, more sharply reflexed, slightly twisted and with margins strongly incurved; corona disc-shaped, ribbed, brilliant to light greenish yellow 6C-8B, with mouth wavy, rim minutely crenate. Dwarf. Resembles `Xit' in form "

Yellow Xit is a sport of Xit, registered in 1968, and only description is for Xit, so :
Xit:
"
Fl. 46 mm wide; perianth segments broadly ovate, prominently mucronate, pure white, somewhat reflexed, concave, smooth, overlapping one-third; the inner segments more nearly ovate, with margins wavy; corona disc-shaped, strongly ribbed, greenish white, with green at base, mouth even or a little wavy, rim entire or minutely notched. Resembles `Segovia' in form "
I have marked in bold the main "differences" !! ;D

Alan

You do have questions....
I saw Segovia bigger in flower and also higher.
I must have a nearer look outside, when I have the time tomorrow or Saturday.
Xit and Yellow Xit are almost over, so I think they are earlier to.
You hear from me.... :)

Thank you Maggi and Luit for your information.

Obviously growing conditions will make a difference but, in between showers,  I have been measuring both
and N. Segovia flower is slightly larger and so I feel that I do have the different varieties.

Thanks again Luit for all your help and a belated , but heartfelt , 'Thank you' for showing us such an amazing field of plants.

Regards

Alan

Today I was able to pick all three flowers and couldmake a picture of them without winds.
N. Yellow Xit is the most yellowish of them.
Segovia is a bit bigger than  Yellow Xit.
And Xit is pure white.
The height of the first two is about the same: 35-40 cm and Xit is rather low here: ± 25 cm.

I wish I'd seen this earlier to see if I have yellow Xits. I didn't realise it meant the 'thing' in the middle?

To much honour! The only thing I needed were the three varieties and make a picture.
Just good luck at the right moment I would say. :D :D

Luit,
More help please. A narcissus has appeared in my garden which has the appearence of a yellow 'Thalia'.
Has your resident expert have any idea what it might be?
Has any forum member any ideas?
