Can anyone tell me what are differences in H.nobilis and H.americana (how they look)?

Leena, it is not easy because there are a lot of different leave forms.
Hepatica nobilis the lobes are more heart-shaped


Hepatica americana (Hepatica nobilis var. obtusa) the lobes are more kidney-shaped.

Thank you Herman for the pictures of leaves! I have some H.americana seedlings waiting to be planted, and I was wondering if I plant them close to H.nobilis, am I going to identify them later or am I going to mix them up if I forget which one is which..

Sorry I didn't see this Leena. I think I've posted few leaves images at one time.
Things are not that simple; leaves in Hepatica americana can vary greatly in size, lobes shape, pubescence (can look just like the nobilis Herman posted it).
I would say to plant them well labelled. Here's the description for H. americana from Flora of North America.

Hepaticas seem to be quite difficult to identify, but all are beautiful!
This May has been colder and so even today there are still some flowers in my H.nobilis (grown in woodland bed) and at the same time the earliest seed pods in the same plants are ripening any day now. I have put small acryl bags over the seed pods to help catch the seeds.

Our Dryad Nursery fresh seed list containing hepatica and galanthus seeds should be ready by this evening and will be sent to all those on our email list.

Some of the plants of Hepatica pubescens ex 'Hohobeni', planted last spring, have put up single flowers now.
I hope they still prepare themselves for the winter well. This is so pretty, I can already imagine what it would look like with lot of flowers.

Leena, it is very pretty. The one I have (maybe a sibling?) has also started to flower and I am very pleased with it  .

Carsten, they are so nice! All other of my Hepaticas also wait for spring, but almost all H.pubescens- seedlings have tried to put up a flower in the autumn. I think it may be that when it started to rain in August after a very dry summer (and planted out in spring, though I had watered them), the plants think now is new spring. Next year they may flower more in the right time  . Now I'm hoping for a mild winter, and when the cold comes I will put dry oak leaves around the plants to protect them.

Carsten, they are lovely and I hope they will flower in spring also. I have no idea why Leena's and mine both flower at the same time out of season. Apparently something has triggered them to start early.


Most of my plants out in the garden are covered with leaves now, ready for the winter.  When I looked under the cover I found buds and flowers on several H. transsilvanica.  They are not as well behaved as yours  .
