Today I was on a Hepatica show in Kalmthout (Belgium) and saw some beautiful things. These crossings have very big flowers!

I envy you, Herman. It must have been lovely to see all the beautiful Hepatica.  I wish we had something like that here too.

I wonder if the F2 cross could show the desired form? Any ideas?

By the way, Carsten, do you think your crosses are fertile? Most Hepatica x schlyteri are not.  Some of my seedlings from the cross between H.maxima and H. noiblis have lots of pollen and others have undeveloped stamens with no pollen at all. They may all be infertile, it is impossible to know until you have tried to pollinate them.

If you want a spotted cross and if your plants are fertile it may be better to back cross them with the spotted nobilis again. I am just speculating  ::).

Today some more pictures from the show. There were a lot of Hepatica japonica forms but I am more interested in Hepatica's for the garden.
There was also made a small garden with Hepatica japonica.

I love the small show garden with Hepatica and logs and mosses.

Carsten, you have really nice doubles and semidoubles and H.japonica seems to thrive outside in your garden, such big clumps!
H.nobilis 'Finnish Flag' is something which is not known in Finland. Last year I asked around and no-one had heard of it here, but it proves that it could be possible to find that kind of plants here in the nature. I have to keep on looking. :) Perhaps populations where there are both white and blue forms could  give that kind of spotted flowers? Although white ones are quite rare here, I know only one place in the wild with white ones.

Herman, thanks for your impressions of the show. Very aesthetic presentation!

Leena, the japonicas do work very well for me in the garden. But this is only the second winter outside and therefore you canīt be sure how it works in the long run. I lost one plant out of some 15 and those remaining developed much better then those in pots in the greenhouse.
'Finnish Flag' should be from Mikael Ahlgren from Finland. I got it from a generous forumist from Sweden and it is also called 'Finska Flaggan'. In my view spotted flowers are not a combination of the two colors, e.g. white and blue, but a mutation that often stays stable propagated by seed.

Gunilla, back crossing might be a good idea. Thank you! But in this case only 25% of maxima will remain in the cross.
There are fertile x schlyteri crosses but many also wonīt work for further crossings. I will try to find the fertile ones between my seedlings  ;)

On Saturday at Loughborough Show we had nowhere to put our 6 Hepaticas except Class 1.  Amazingly we won a first and the Sewell Medal. We thought you Hepatica lovers might like to see them.

So many beautiful Hepaticas to admire here  :)

Thanks for showing pictures from the Kalmthout show Herman. It would be well worth of a visit one year.

Greetings from B.C.   I was wondering which hepatica this one is ...  having difficulty to paste the image.  It is the deep blue nodding hepatica from this site:  http://www.srgc.org.uk/nurseryws/040404/content.html             5th image down.  I would like to try and find it here in the Vancouver lower mainland or try to find it's seeds.  Thank you.

Hi!  And welcome to the  Forum!
I think this is the  one  you  like......

Ian Christie  just  has that image  labelled as "Hep. darkest blue "  so I think it is  simply  one of the  seedlings he had raised.  I'm drawing his attention to this  post in case he can help with a name - of course others  may be able to suggest  one for you  that is  similar!

Note  from Ian  C -
"Hello, The picture shows Hepatica nobilis which are very variable from seed - this is one which we grew years ago and now have so many both inside and in the garden.

Perhaps  one of the best new H nobilis blue flowers is 'BIBO'
I could collect some seed later if this is any use,         cheers Ian "
