Kendal SRGC/AGS Show 2019

I will add some pictures with plant names and exhibitor names just to allow viewers to see plants they may want to look out for at future shows. As already intimated it was a filthy day weather wise, not helped by me being under the weather with a bad head cold and virtually no voice. Never mind sitting in front of the fire later on, large glass of Talisker in hand watching the Calcutta Cup match did make a nice end to the day .
I won't repeat pictures of the Hoyle entry in Class one with all those super plants, when we were judging the class the decision was between the Dionysia and the Saxifrage for the Forrest  and the opinion was that the saxifrage was the best anyone had ever seen on the show bench, both for its size but mainly for the evenness of colour right across the cushion so it won.
I will start with some Primula
Primula allionii 'Coolock Snowball' from Ian Kidman (59)

Primula  'Koblesk' from Brian Burrow, a new one this for me, liked it


P. a 'Lacewing by me in 59, is a favourite of mine

Stella and David Rankin showed an interesting 3 pan of Asiatic primula which were
P. moupinensis ssp barkamensis

P. denticulata var cachemiriana


Tecophilaea cyanocrocus from Jim Watson in 76, another of my favourite plants


Ophyris tenthredinifera from John Richards (74), a lovely specimen

Still not getting it right but carry on regardless!!
Callianthemum kernerianum from Don Peace in 68...he had a few of these at the show, this one had the best picture from me

Saxifraga 'Allendale Bravo' from Clare Oates (53), is another of my favourites but struggle to get it to flower anything like this

Class 37 is a six pan class 3 in flower and 3 foliage and was won by Chris Lilley, his three flowering plants were
Ipheon sellowianum
Draba rosularis
Hepatica nobilis var japonica
Trillium nivale from Alan Spenceley in 30, had more flowers on it than you see as quite a lot hidden by foliage
Trillium rivale also from Alan (3)

Saxifraga longifolia won the best foliage Kirby Cup for Lawrence Peet (19)
Saxifraga 'Cumulus' from F&B Hoyle, another massive pot (20)

Crocus veluchensis 'Giant White' from me in 26, not sure re the Giant White bit as can't find a reference to it, had it a long time though

Corydalis sewerzowii from Peter Hood (17) Cert. of Merit
Corydalis kusnetzovii from Don Peace (15), of course Don had the most points in the Open Section so winning the Hollett Trophy

Crocus veluchensis 'Giant White' from me in 26, not sure re the Giant White bit as can't find a reference to it, had it a long time though

In recent years a class for cactus has proved popular and
Mammilaria woodsii shown by Alan Spenceley (84) certainly stood out
Alyostera heliosa ssp cajasensis was shown by John Dixon (84)
Primula forbesii from Jeannie Jones in 105, not the bests of pics but gives a good idea
Primula elatior ssp pallasii was another primula from John Richards (9)
Cyclamen coum from Tommy Anderson (62)

Yet another new cultivar (to me at least) from the Allendale stable was
Saxifraga 'Allendale Beau' shown by Tommy Andersonwas shown by Tom Green

Alan Oatway had another busy day running the show but he still had
Primula 'Netta Dennis' (132) and

My last picture is one from Class 1 shown by  F&B Hoyle and it is of
Primula 'Crusader', again a very fine example

I would think the Show has to be happy with the standard and quantity of plants on the benches and people were very cheerful throughout the day despite the non stop rain and wind. I think the Plant Sales did well enough, I saw lots of people carrying newly bought plants around so am optimistic the sales tables did well. It is possible that the sections 2 classes onwards could do with a bit more space as some sections were very crowded but rather too many than too few.
We look forward to seeing many exhibitors at Hexham in its new venue last weekend of this month.

As you say lots of superb plants on the benches in all sections, a wonderfully bright and cheery display on a dismal day. 

Always difficult to predict what will happen on the day. In addition to the usual last minute 'switching of classes' due to plants  going over (thereby breaking up an intended 3 or 6 pan) we also received a large number of late entries.  Whilst this resulted in some classes becoming a little cramped, as you say the more the merrier and it is great to see so many plants on the bench ... perhaps next year we might even entice all the show plants out of the exhibitors cars

We were delighted to welcome some first time exhibitors to the show this year, and I am glad to report each of them exhibited a plant that was award a sticker.  Look forward to seeing them at at future shows.
