Can anyone help with these two please?
« on: April 27, 2008, 02:16:42 PM »
Can anyone help with an ID for these two plants please. Both were growing at Knightshayes Court (see pics, (ad nauseum!) on the Visit to Knightshayes Court thread on the General Pages.

The first was growing under the tree canopy and apologies for the poor quality of the pictures, I was having a senior moment camera settings wise! Two pics, one of the flower, one of the leaves.

The second was growing in a fountain pond.

David the lower one is water hawthorn. It's edible and can be put on salads or picked and eaten as you walk

David the blue one is a Symphytum grandiflorum (or ibericum) probably Wisley Blue.
A good carpeter for shady places.
Luit van Delft, right in the heart of the beautiful flowerbulb district, Noordwijkerhout, Holland.

Sadly Luit died on 14th October 2016 - happily we can still enjoy his posts to the Forum

Luit, many thanks for that. Nice plant but not for my garden I'm afraid.

Thanks Mark. If I'd known that yesterday I wouldn't have spent a tenner on National Trust sandwiches!

The water hawthorn is good because it has leaves during winter, when so often the pond is bare otherwise.  Seeds easily, with little ones popping up in other pots in the pond.  I got mine this year form a friend across the road as she was moving house.  I'm hoping mine will seed a little as well so that I can move some into other ponds as well.
Cheers.

Canberra, Australia.
Min winter temp -8 or -9°C. Max summer temp 40°C. Thankfully, maybe once or twice a year only.

The Symphytum is indeed a good carpeter...we're pulling it out by the armloads (they get planted along the road where they can do what they want--the deer aren't touching them). They do look good in leaf as well and seem to flower for an extended period of time...very useful if you've got the space for them--and the time to keep after them.

...must take the bad with the good I suppose...
