This was supposed to be Haemanthus carneus, but on closer examination, it looks like humilis.  The problem with it being humilis is that humilis bloomed two months ago here.

     

This particular plant grew from seeds sent to me years ago by Doug Westfall of Longbeach, Calif. 

Haemanthus carneus that came from Cameron McMaster had the proper look to it:

     

Here at my place, humilis humilis usually blooms in late June, and carneus usually blooms -- if it blooms at all that year -- just after humilis does.  This one bloomed this time in late
August.  So it seems to me that this one is a hybrid, and most likely with humilis.  In any case, I'm re-labeling this one as (carneus x ?humilis).

In the greenhouse, my Haemanthus barkerae are starting to bloom. This species is native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, which is a Mediterranean climate (winter rainfall area), so this species is dormant in warm summer weather, when it prefers dry weather, and grows in winter, when it prefers cool weather and moderate rainfall. It blooms at the end of summer.


     


This species seems to be more freeze-resistant than  most of the other Haemanthus I have in the greenhouse.  When the furnace pilot lights went out on a very cold night a couple Februaries ago, the barkerae were among the few that bloomed again already the next year.
