Hi, I have six 3" plants (different colors) that are ready to go in a new, hypertufa trough.  Is 4 1/2 inches (12-14 cm) deep inside, with very thick walls.  Is that deep enough for their roots? It will be in full, sometimes hot mid-day sun?  I can bury alot of deep granite slices, to create underground crevices to hopefully cool the roots (as I have noticed the my rock bordering my crevices can heat up, if that is advised.  My above ground crevices require too much attention to keeping moist when weather gets over 95 or 100 degree F.
So, in summary, is that enough depth for roots, and, can they take the heat? It has been frustrating not getting any blooms in my sandbed, except for one that is getting much more light, and it is hot out there as well. Cecile
