Galanthus January 2020
« on: January 01, 2020, 01:24:36 PM »
Sad news  for the  beginning  of a  new  year  that  famous  galanthus grower Colin Mason died on the  30th December.  His  "Fieldgate"  snowdrops  are  grown widely.  He  was  also known for  his  plant  hunting  adventures  in  various  countries.

I was very sad to hear this Maggie - I never met Colin, but spoke to him on the phone a few times - he had a very dry wit, a really nice man.  His Snowdrop legacy will live on in many of our gardens. RIP Colin :'(

A snowdrop of impressive size and beautiful proportions, Maggi! Do You know about its origin?

I only  know  what Richard  wrote  in 2016, Mariette, that  it  is an introduction  from Richard Bashford and   Val Bexley  of   "Woodchippings"

Here is Mrs Macnamara showing why she is my No1 drop.. I took a punt on MrsM back in 2011 after reading some posts on this website. She now grows in four places in my garden, and in a few other gardens of family/friends. This particular clump gets a bit of tomato feed after the flowers finish.

Thank You, Maggi! Certainly a snowdrop I shall try to acquire! Many snowdrops are big, but very few of such a lovely shape. The early flowering-time is also unusual for such giants.

´Mrs. Macnamara´is an exceedingly prolificate and easy snowdrop in most gardens, even without the help of fertilizer. Since it´s a pretty snowdrop, too, I think it´s one to be recommended for everyone starting with snowdrops.

Interesting to read about Mrs macnamara, always wondered what the appeal was, but now I want to buy one too. ;D

Anyways, I wrote a blog post about a trip to Corfu. Might be fun to read or just check some more snowdrop pics.

Also here it does well, and even though it is an early snowdrop in UK or Germany, and is also one of the first to come up here,  it still survives the cold (and snow when there is snow .. not this year so far) and flowers reliably in March-April after the cold is over. A very good snowdrop.

Sad that Colin has passed, but glad that his galanthus lives on..

Hope I'm not digressing. What do you think this little flower is? Will take more

This looks like a Galanthus elwesii with very funny marks. Should it be a named variety or do You just want to know which kind of species it is?
