Coronavirus Statement from Alpine Garden Society
March 6, 2020
"The health and wellbeing of people attending AGS events is top priority for the Society. We are monitoring the situation with coronavirus very closely and following all advice from government and health authorities.
AGS Shows & Events Continue
In line with current advice, all AGS shows and tours are due to continue as planned. Should the advice from the authorities change, we will take appropriate measures and notify any affected parties straight away. You can read the government’s coronavirus action plan
here
.
Feeling Unwell?
At this time of year, cold and flu viruses are common. As of 9am on 5th March, there were only 115 confirmed cases of coronavirus among the UK’s population of 66.4 million people. Given these figures, if you feel unwell it is far more likely that you have cold or flu than coronavirus.
If you have reason to suspect that you have been exposed to coronavirus, the government asks that you call the NHS’s 111 service (and do not go to your GP or hospital). Most cases of coronavirus can be treated with over the counter medications and isolation at home while the affected person recovers.
Everday Measures to Stay Well
Everyday measures that the AGS advises everyone to take to stay fit and healthy include:
Wash hands thoroughly and frequently, especially before eating, or use hand sanitiser when handwashing is not possible
Catch coughs and sneezes in tissues and immediately throw them away or catch them in the crook of your arm
Stay at home if you feel unwell to keep other people healthy
These simple measure are very effective at reducing the spread of all viruses, including coronavirus. If we all take these measures, they should help to keep everyone fit and well. We will update you straight away should the situation change."

From Hartside, one of the specialist nurseries attending the #Kendal Show 14-03-20: "Now the snow that fell overnight has thawed, we are sorting plants out for the joint Alpine Garden Society Scottish Rock Garden Club Show at Kirkby Kendal School, Kendal on Saturday, lots of excellent Show plants and Nurseries selling a wonderful selection of Alpines"
All Welcome!

It is planned for the Kendal Show to go ahead on Saturday 14th March 2020 - but the RHS Joint Rock Committee meeting has been cancelled.

Difficult to see the logic of cancelling one and not the other? I'm still going but wonder if it's the right thing to do. Should we be thinking of online shows this spring?

My understanding is that joint rock cancelled because some members decided not to travel. Am on my way to Kendal now to help with setup later.

From Alpine Garden Society March 13, 2020
The Kendal Plant Show on 14th March is going ahead as planned in line with government advice.
The Kendal Plant Show, brought to you by the Scottish Rock Garden Club and the AGS, will go ahead tomorrow as planned. It will begin at 10am in Kirbie Kendal School, Kendal (near the Lake District).
The show will feature a range of specialist alpine plants as exhibitors battle it out for sought-after medals and trophies. It will also feature quality plants for sale from nine specialist nurseries under one roof.
Coronavirus Actions
Questions have been raised over whether this show will go ahead due to coronavirus concerns. The AGS would like to make clear that, in line with the latest government advice, the Kendal Plant Show will continue as planned. The only difference is that the Joint Rock Garden Plant Committee Meeting that would usually take place at this event has been postponed.
We ask that anyone with a high temperature or new, continuous cough stay away from the show. We also ask that attendees be extra vigilant about ensuring hands are washed regularly to keep surfaces clean.

A couple of nurseries expected to attend the Kendal Show today pulled out from the event - this will be happening everywhere in the next while.
Whether or not nurseries decide to withdraw from any events, or the events themselves are cancelled, please bear in mind that these specialist nurseries do not have an easy time of business at the best of times, and many will lose substantial percentages of their income because of this situation, as I have just been reading about on social media from Tonkin's Nursery in Australia. Without these nurseries we would also lose out in a major fashion as hobby growers - saving the nurseries is definitely in our own interest!
Be kind- use mail order where you can!

Some more photos lifted from Ian Smith on FB!
Frank Hoyle looking suitably delighted with another Farrer Medal win at AGS/SRGC
show today at Kendal with this large and wonderful Saxifraga- a lovely smile from a happy exhibitor!
Congratulations, Frank!
This Shortia was shown by the Bookeroo - sadly Cliiff isn't feeling too well so his plant was prepared by Sue and taken to the show by Norman Davies - and got a red ticket too!
This is a 3 pan Dionysia entry - how smart it is!
Well done to Alan Oatway and his team for managing to have a great show under difficult circumstances !!

Don Peace again won the Hollett trophy for most firsts in the open section with 19 points. Brian Burrow's Iris willmottiana won the Duncan Lowe award for best plant in a 19cm pot and the 90th anniversary award. David Millward's Helichrysum coralloides won the Kirby cup for a foliage plant.
