As has already been posted Frank Aad Barbara Hoyle won the Farrer medal with a magnificent
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' from class 1, when I say this was close on a 36cm pan you will appreciate it even more
Sebaea thomasii 'Bychan' from Tim Lever (3)
Anemone pavonina from Andrew Ward (110)

Last two
Primula 'Petticoat' from Robert Scott in 155
Puchkinia scilloides from Frank Dobson in 112, a nice exhibit
to finish, the trough class (43)was won by Stan da Prato

Well that's my run through of plants in close up, given the situation with regard to the virus it was a good show from the exhibitor numbers point of view, there probably was quite a reduction in the paying public through the door but was an enjoyable day, good drive home in decent weather, enjoyed my evening malt by the fire...wonderful.

Enjoyable and informative reporting  as ever from Sandy. As to his disappointment that   his Rhodo Snow Lady is dying  back after  40 years  that seems a good  innings  from a plant ! The one in his Kendal report was too wide after about ten years so cut back hard a couple of years ago. I find  it trouble free but some report it suffers from frost. Glendoick  say Lucy Lou is better.  The two snaps  show  one of each with very little difference in the  flowers.  Snow Lady (not the Kendal plant )  is the first  pic. It is starting  to open  in the middle so may get  the chop soon.

I hope you are keeping well during these difficult times?. Do you think any dwarf Rhododendron would respond to this treatment and if so when would you advocate cutting back?

I planted out my Snow Lady and it was beautiful last year but got frosted  week past Friday so no flowers this year.

Many will but I could not  guarantee  all! I think  the answer is if  it's  too big or misshapen  just   go for it. If you do it as  soon as it has  flowered  that gives it max regrowing time though it is likely  to be more than one season to get it   back to a nice shapely  bush.

While  we  have  had  success  in  cutting  back some  rhodos  completely,  if  we  can  we  usually  leave  at  least one  branch growing  with leaves on to keep the  plant  "connected" to life, as  it  were.  Having  a   part  of the  plant  still with  leaves  to photosynthise allows  the  plant  to have  some  normal growth while  the  plant  regenerates its  other  growth.
