We found this self-sowing round a late friend's garden.  I can't recall him ever pointing it out. 

We dug up 3-4 seedlings (or were they suckers?).

Here's a photo of one of them.

John, it looks a bit like Acer miyabei to me.

Identified today by Jack Alexander, former head propagator at the Arnold Arboretum, as Acer pictum var. mono.  He said break off a leaf and if its sap is milky white that's mono and so it was. Good thing as I always wanted it.  I dug three seedling and a friend three so two people happy.
