Akkar lebanon fire _ save akkar forests from fire
« on: August 30, 2020, 11:19:43 PM »
On 23rd August, 2020, a forest fire broke out in the Akkar region of Lebanon and raged for more than 48 hours. An area of 40 hectares has been destroyed including cedar and juniperus forests, some of the trees are more than 300 years old. The natural habitats of birds, animals and insects have been totally destroyed. This area is considered to be one of Lebanon's most important, dense and diverse forests.

The rugged terrain and lack of roads prevented the local fire engine, and a supply of water, to reach the fire.  Unfortunately due to the lack of fire fighting equipment the fire spread rapidly and was difficult to bring under control. A team of local volunteers from the Akkar Trail Group managed the fire by hand using primitive means such as beating and using dirt to subdue the flames and embers..

The local fire engine is expected to support an area exceeding 160 square kilometres, including forests, villages, mountains and farmland. The current vehicle is unable to access a majority of the land it is expected to protect.

The Akkar Trail Group seek to collect donations to cover the costs of purchasing a four-wheel drive vehicle and fire-fighting equipment to ensure this remote area of Lebanon is supported against forest fires in the future.  A four wheel drive vehicle will ensure a rapid response to fighting fires and be able to reach areas that cannot be supported by the current fire engine. This equipment will not only prove vital in preserving one of Lebanon's most important and diverse forest regions, but also reduce the risk of harm to human life in fighting fires.

Any support you can offer is gratefully appreciated.
