Sisyrinchium ID please
« on: June 04, 2008, 06:03:02 PM »
This weekend we visited 9 very pleasant gardens in Hampshire.  Two were excellent, and in one of the others the lady had this Sisyrinchium, which she had been given.  It was about a foot high and has this fan of flower buds (a bit like a strelitzia).  Can anyone help with an ID please and any idea where obtainable?

what a coincidence I saw the same in a Dublin garden at the weekend. Did she say S. palmifolium, Heather?

Could be palmifolium . I have some seedlings but have not seen a mature plant yet.  Seeds are available from Plant World in Devon.

Thanks Mark and Roma, having followed your id with a quick Google I think you are on the spot.  I will certainly get some seed, I am intrigued to see them in full flower.

Both Sisyrinchium palmifolium and S. macrocephalum have yellow flowers.... is that correct?

Sisyrinchium palmifolium has yellow flowers. Don't know about macrocephalum.

Thanks to the identification I have been able to find this:

Now I will definitely have to have one! ;D
