I did some work on the Wikipedia articles on UK Potamogeton a few years ago using many of the sources Nick mentions, hopefully they are informative.
Worth also noting that the broad-leaved pondweeds are attractive and ornamental plants for a garden pond, not difficult once you understand their requirements and much less weedy than many of the 'oxygenators' on sale commercially.
