Dryad Nursery Ebay snowdrops 2022
« on: February 08, 2022, 09:47:13 PM »
In our listings tonight, we offer for the first time our new introduction for 2022 – DRYAD BLIZZARD, part of the
brand new ‘Dryad Snow’ series of true poculiform snowdrops named for their exceptionally pristine bright white flowers.
The Blizzard lineage started in 2008, when I was generously sent seeds of a poculiform G. elwesii from Canada. When they flowered in 2013, none were poculiform, which was unfortunate but not unexpected. The seedlings were inter-crossed to produce 6 seeds. These F2 seedlings began to flower in 2017 and to my delight, the result was one perfect poculiform.
After 5 years evaluation, this has proved to be a tall and graceful beauty, growing to 30cm under glass, the leaves only half that height at flowering time. The dazzling, large flowers are in perfect proportion at 40mm long including the ovary, and open into an elegant parasol shape. A clump in flower in your garden will make a glorious and breath-taking focal point.
This is the first of ONLY 2 PLANTS of this gem to be released this year.

Blizzard is joined by some of our all-time favourite varieties from the Myths and Legends series of inverse poculiforms:
Ravishing DRYAD VENUS with the curvy, ruffled flowers is ably assisted by the dashingly bold green outers of DRYAD DEMETER to offer an irresistible and unique pair for any enthusiastic collector.
Their quieter, mysterious sister DRYAD ECHO rewards close examination with her subtle pale ‘echo’ above the darker apical mark on both inner and outer segments – instantly recognisable when you know where to look!

The golden contingent comes in the duet of our signature DRYAD GOLDS – DRYAD GOLD RIBBON and the more recently named DRYAD GOLD STANDARD. These are both imposing plants for the late winter garden with large flowers which glow in the sun, and will bring their own sunshine to our darker English winter days.

Finally, we offer two of the wonderful new ESTONIAN BIRDS series of doubles from breeder Taavi Tuulik – possibly my two favourite varieties:
AUL (Long-tailed Duck) is a cute and compact variety with a two-tone mark on the three outer segments – deep green ‘moustache’ at the sinus below a more diffuse apple-green V towards the base.
KIUR (Tree Pipit) has flowers so neat and regular they almost defy belief, with three outer segments around a perfectly regular rosette of inners, each bearing a bold X mark, with the ‘basal arms’ of the X infilled with a slightly paler green.

As usual, you can see the actual plants that you are bidding for on the listing, and all our offerings tonight come to you as multi-nosed ‘clumps-in-waiting’ for instant impact.
You can find them all here:

Good luck!

Finishing tonight: the first chance to add our new introduction, DRYAD BLIZZARD to your collection - A tall, elegant pure poculiform G.elwesii which cannot fail to be noticed in your garden due to its large pristine white flowers and imposing height. One of only two available this year.
From ‘more white than green’ to ‘more green than white’ - the startling emerald outers of customer favourite DRYAD DEMETER make an equally impressive feature in the garden.
DEMETER’s two Myths and Legends compatriots – sensuous DRYAD VENUS and mysterious DRYAD ECHO complete a very distinctive trio of this fascination group.
The two golds on offer this session are the medium tall, large flowered pair - DRYAD GOLD STANDARD with full, rounded outers, and DRYAD GOLD RIBBON with the largest inner mark of all the DRYAD GOLD group.
Two of my favourite double snowdrops complete the menu tonight – cute and compact AUL with the full flowers and two-toned inner mark, and the superbly neat and regular KIUR, perfect form set off by deep dark green inner marks.
As usual, you can see the actual plants that you are bidding for on the listing, and all our offerings tonight come to you as multi-nosed ‘clumps-in-waiting’ for instant impact.

In tonight’s EBAY listings:
DRYAD CERBERUS adds to the pantheon of our collectors’ favourite Myths and Legends series of inverse poculiforms, and has brought many requests when I’ve shown the flower in my lectures – it is truly eye-popping!
I remember seeing the first bud, obviously containing multiple flowers, and being astonished that when it opened, each of its three flowers was perfectly formed. Immediately, it was given the name of the three-headed dog of Greek legend – DRYAD CERBERUS.
Of course, I wish I could tell you that it will do the same regularly, but although it has since had several twins, there have been no more triplets so far.
Nevertheless, even as a singleton it is a stunning plant, up to 30cm tall on sturdy stems over short plicate leaves which display the flowers well. The vigorous mature bulbs usually bear two scapes, with the flower on the secondary scape of different appearance to the primary, so you will still be getting at least two flowers for the price of one!
The outer segment mark is a beautiful deep emerald, formed from an apical inverted V, which is usually, but not always, joined to an oval zone almost reaching to the base. When fully open, the apices of the outer segments flip outwards at the sinus. The segments are of heavy texture with longitudinal corrugations. The inner segments are similarly marked.
Secondary flowers can come in many different variations, making a clump very intriguing and a real talking point.
We have only ONE bulb for sale this season!
CERBERUS is watched over by DRYAD JUPITER - Jupiter was the king of the gods in Roman mythology, and this name was chosen for our inverse poculiform because of its regal, upright bearing and crown-shaped outer mark.
Growing to about 25 cm under cover, the strong stems bear large flowers, held well above the leaves for maximum impact.
Each of the outer segments is broad and convex leading to a full, rounded outline to the flower, while the edge of the outers is tilted upwards to form a rim which reaches all the way around the perimeter except for the basal ‘claw’. The texture is distinctly ridged, so that the outer mark, a rich green arc, extends along the furrows to produce the ‘crown’ which is a signature of this variety. There is a small sinus notch.
The inner segments feature a green X mark, of which the apical half is deep green, while the basal half is pale and diffuse, whereas the inner surfaces are almost entirely striped with green.
The plants increase well, forming large bulbs which flower consistently, and will make an imposing and majestic statement in the garden. Again we have only ONE bulb this season.

The DRYAD GOLD trio comprises:
DRYAD GOLD BULLION – compact, fast increasing and free flowering.
DRYAD GOLD CHARM – large flowers and bulbs, low, broad leaves.
DRYAD GOLD SCEPTRE- strong growing, medium height with large flowers.

We have a strong Estonian contribution with two Estonian Bird Doubles and two Estonian Spirit group yellows:
Estonian Bird Double KAUR – named after the Estonian for Arctic Loon (Gavia arctica).
KAUR is a fine double snowdrop flowering at about 13cm high. The flowers usually have 3 unmarked outers and a neat whorl of inner segments which have an inverted heart mark at the apex and occasionally a fainter mark at the base. Between the outers and the inner whorl, there is usually an additional set of 3 segments that are intermediate in shape and colouring to the others.  Taavi thinks that this makes it a double poculiform. The leaves are about half the height of the flowering stems at flowering time. The bulbs are vigorous and increase well.

Estonian Bird Double LAGLE - named after the Estonian for Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis).
LAGLE is a very fine double snowdrop flowering at about 16cm high with usually very regular flowers with 3 outers and a neat whorl of inner segments which have a double mark, the two marks often joined together. The leaves are upright and about half the height of the flowering stems at flowering time.

The ESTONIAN SPIRIT GROUP of snowdrops were discovered by renowned Estonian plantsman Taavi Tuulik in abandoned gardens and woods in Estonia and named as part of the Spirit family due to their pale, ghostly coloration and residual presence in abandoned or secluded areas.  As a group they are distinct by their generally compact stature, very pale leaves and ethereal colouring of ovary and inner mark – a very pale creamy yellow. A distinctive and outstanding diminutive form of G. nivalis, and a very different treasure for your collection. Although appearing delicate, they are tough customers used to harsh Estonian winters.
To assist those few collectors who may already own any of the group, we retain Taavi’s original numbering to identify the clones offered.
ESTONIAN SPIRIT GROUP  clone 2009/CS9      ONLY ONE THIS SEASON
Found on the Island of Hiiumaa, Luidja village, naturalized population in alder forest, 2006.
Height 14 cm, outer segments 23 mm, inner segment marks very pale.

One of the taller clones at 12 cm in flower, the foliage more spreading than CS5 and CS6. Having the largest flowers of the group, the flower has a distinctive pale olive ovary which is often square shouldered or flat where it meets the pedicel. The outer segments are strongly cupped laterally. The inner segments are long relative to the outers and have a very pale olive mark that usually turns up at the ends in a ‘smile’. It is free flowering.

ESTONIAN SPIRIT GROUP  ‘KUDRUS’ (clone 2009/CS1)     ONLY ONE THIS SEASON
I urged Taavi to give this clone a name, as it is a gorgeous little snowdrop - a group in flower give the appearance of a clump of tiny lampshades. Possibly my favourite of the Estonian Spirit group! As it is so distinct, Taavi has agreed to name it 'Kudrus' which means 'Tiny Pearl'.
The ovary and flowers are both distinctly rounded, the cupped outer segments having a distinct shoulder after the claw. The short pedicel holds the voluptuous little flower close to the straight spathe.  The colour of the ovary and inner mark are a pale pistachio when grown under glass. The silvery leaves are erect and about half the height of the flowers. Mid height, flowering at about 10cm. Vanishingly rare and a total delight.

We round off tonight’s offerings with Cyril Lafong’s demure little true poculiform ANNIELLE, named after his wife, and the popular MOTHER GOOSE - A somewhat mercurial snowdrop which at its best is an eye-catching plant with a green ovary and deep yellow inner mark. The yellow mark, however, can be green in some seasons. Most of my plants have been a good yellow, but other growers have suggested that the offsets give the best colour while the main flower has the greatest risk of being green. This phenomenon is shown in the plant for sale – the primary flower being green-marked, while the second flowers is a good yellow.

As usual, you can see the actual plants that you are bidding for on the listing, and all our offerings tonight come to you as multi-nosed ‘clumps-in-waiting’ for instant impact.

Finishing tonight:
The star of the show is the first plant to be released of our new Myths and Legends series – DRYAD CERBERUS. We only have this ONE plant to offer this season. DRYAD CERBERUS is a tall and imposing snowdrop, up to 30cm high when mature. The vigorous bulbs usually produce a secondary scape – intriguingly the secondary flower is usually different in appearance making a clump in flower a wonder to behold. In addition it will occasionally also produce 2, or even 3 flowers on the same pedicel, but even as a singleton the flower is handsomely marked with a bold emerald outer mark consisting of a ‘bridge’ over the sinus, connected to an oval basal zone, occasionally separating to a double mark. The outers are charmingly flicked up at the apex.

Its compatriot Myths member is DRYAD JUPITER, with its large, heavily textured flowers on strong stems and crown-shaped crescent mark on the outer segments.

The DRYAD signature yellows feature:
DRYAD GOLD BULLION, fairly low growing but noted for its fast increase and free-flowering.
DRYAD GOLD CHARM, short and sturdy with exceptionally large flowers and short, broad leaves.
DRYAD GOLD SCEPTRE, strong-growing variety with large flowers that open widely.

The yellow theme continues with 2 cultivars from the distinctive, pale Estonian Spirit Group of G. nivalis, including ‘KUDRUS’ – one of the few to be named, with prettily rounded flowers, and the unnamed clone 2009-CS1.

The final glint of yellow comes from MOTHER GOOSE with the somewhat variable egg-yolk coloured inner mark. The plant on offer is well marked.

Our 2 doubles this session are from the Estonian Birds series of distinctive and rare double snowdrops bred from parents not previously used in breeding for doubles, so they are a genuinely new break from doubles available in the past, and are destined to become very collectable.

Finally, an attractive little true poculiform in the rarely offered ANNIELLE completes the selection of different shapes, colours and sizes which we hope will appeal to all tastes.

Multi-nosed bulbs all, and you can find them all here:

In our EBAY listings tonight:
Making its debut tonight is our third new introduction for 2022, DRYAD ZEUS.
Dryad Zeus has been a nursery favourite since its first flowering, easily spotted amongst all its peers due to its bold streak of deep green running down the centre of the outer segments, leading to it being named after Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder in Greek mythology, well-known for sending down bolts of lightning from the heavens. This snowdrop is equally striking!
Flowering at up to 270mm high (under glass, probably shorter outside), the flowers are held on upright pedicels above arching, plicate leaves which are half the height of the pedicels at flowering time.
The mark on each outer segment is a parallel sided, rich green longitudinal stripe covering the central one third of the segment, rounded towards the apex, at which there is a white notch, and fading to paler yellowish green just before reaching the base. The stripe usually has a very slight ‘waist’ halfway along, occasionally breaking into a double mark.
We offer multi-nosed bulbs, which increase well and will soon become an electrifying feature in your collection!

For comparison, you might like to see Dryad Zeus and Dryad Demeter side by side. Zeus was bred from Wendy’s Gold x South Hayes and is easy to tell apart from Demeter, which is from Trymlet x South Hayes. Note the shapes of the outer segment marks and very different leaf habit.
You may have noticed that Zeus has a yellow as a mother, so it is worth pollinating with another yellow to see what you get!
Zeus is attended by three fellow Myths and Legends – the sleek DRYAD ARTEMIS, enigmatic DRYAD ECHO and ravishing DRYAD VENUS, together making an unmissable ensemble.

Our DRYAD GOLDS for this session include probably the most requested of the group – perky little DRYAD GOLD INGOT, with the olive inner mark contrasting with the yellow ovary – in effect, a reverse 'Blonde Inge'. Keeping it company is the taller and larger DRYAD GOLD STANDARD, and the compact DRYAD GOLD NUGGET.

In a paler hue, the diminutive and dainty ESTONIAN SPIRIT GROUP is represented by two clones:
CLONE 2009/CS4 is distinctive for its darker, more olive yellow mark, with a very narrow bridge, contrasting with a clear yellow, more rounded ovary. The flower hangs free of the spathe on a fairly long pedicel, the thicker textured outer segments being fairly strongly cupped, with a short claw. It flowers at 7cm high here.
CLONE Käina 2007/3 is vigorous and free flowering, in full flower here just now on a raised bed.

Finally, the pair of Taavi Tuulik’s ESTONIAN BIRD DOUBLES are RISTPART whose mother plant is G. elwesii from NW Black Sea Coast - never before used in breeding as far as Taavi knows, which is one of his favourites, and LUIK – so far only seen in its spiky immature form here, but Taavi tells me that in mature bulbs, the flowers change from spiky to a more normal shape.

As always, you can see the actual plants that you are bidding for on the listing, and all our offerings tonight come to you as multi-nosed ‘clumps-in-waiting’ for instant impact.
You can find them all here:

IN LIGHT OF CURRENT EVENTS, ALL OF THE PROFITS FROM ALL OF TONIGHT’S LISTINGS WILL GO TO MEDÉCINS SANS FRONTIERES. I THINK THEY ARE GOING TO BE NEEDED. Please bid generously.

Listed later tonight:
The first bulb to be offered of DRYAD TERPSICHORE (pronounced Terp-SIC-ory).
This is the last of our 2022 introductions for this spring, and one of our Myths and Legends series of inverse poculiforms, DRYAD TERPSICHORE is named for one of the nine Muses of Greek legend, who was also the goddess of dance.
Her snowdrop has long been a favourite here due to the fluid, informal bearing of the flowers, each adopting an individual pose with slightly twisted segments giving the impression of whirling movement, skirts flaring as if they are dancing, even when there is no breeze.
The artistry continues with the outer segment mark which is a painterly ‘splash’ along the lower third of the midline, stopping short of the up-tilted apical sinus, while the inner segments bear an inverted deep green heart. The flowers are sweetly scented.
The plants are neat and compact, with upright, plicate leaves which are short at flowering time, with the large flowers borne on upright stems reaching to 20cm in height.
In the legend, Terpsichore was thought to be the mother of the Sirens, whose haunting song lured sailors to their doom, but the siren-call of this romantic flower can only lead to delight as the flowers appear to swirl and spin in a silent dance.

The second and last of DRYAD BLIZZARD, the beautiful and imposing new pure poculiform variety, heralding what we hope will be a new series of ‘snow’ themed poculiforms from the Dryad breeding programme.
The Blizzard lineage started  in 2008, when I was generously sent seeds of a poculiform G. elwesii from Canada. When they flowered in 2013, none were poculiform, which was unfortunate but not unexpected. The seedlings were intercrossed to produce 6 seeds.

The striking emerald flowers of DRYAD DEMETER are always in demand,  a truly eye-catching and distinctive plant that will be a gem in anyone’s collection.

The ever-popular DRYAD GOLD yellows are represented by DRYAD GOLD CHARM – broad low leaves displaying the very large flowers over a long period. DRYAD GOLD NUGGET, small and comely with the acid green inner mark, and perky DRYAD GOLD INGOT with the deeper, larger olive inner mark. Last of the golds this session is DRYAD GOLD RIBBON, a larger  variety up to 25cm in flower in the garden, with the largest yellow inner mark of all the DRYAD GOLD group.

Our little pair of ESTONIAN BIRDS include chunky little AUL with the two-toned outer marks, and KIUR with its amazingly regular , neat flowers.

Finally two shades of pale from the ESTONIAN SPIRIT GROUP: CLONE 2009/CS4 with a darker inner mark, and exceptionally free- flowering CLONE KÄINA 2007/3.

All come to you as multi-nosed ‘clumps-in-waiting’ for instant impact.
You can find them all here:

It was thanks to the generous bidding!
Our penultimate listings go live tonight!
As always we have a great spread of different styles, sizes and colours of snowdrops, so there must surely be something for every taste.
The headline variety must be the second and LAST DRYAD ZEUS.
A fitting companion to its stablemate DRYAD DEMETER, and a wonderful contrast to the curvy DRYAD VENUS, which is also in tonight’s line up.

Another debutante, Galanthus TILLUKE is offered for the FIRST TIME and we have only ONE plant.
TILLUKE is the tiniest green tipped snowdrop I’ve ever seen. It was found by Taavi Tuulik as a single bulb in an abandoned garden in Esiküla, on Kassari island, Estonia in 2009. ‘Tilluke’ means ‘tiny’ in Estonian and is a very fitting name for this miniature gem.
Flowering height is about 7cm under glass. The tiny flowers are only 13 mm long, the strongly clawed outer segments having a fresh apple-green mark in the apical quarter. The inner segments are distinctively longitudinally concave, the apical mark a dark green inverted U covering a third of their length.
To pronounce the name, the nearest I can get is Tilll-uck-ay. Taavi suggested the nearest in Google Translate is probably tillukke in Finnish (tilluke in Estonian sounds wrong here):
https://translate.google.ee/?hl=et#view=home&op=translate&sl=fi&tl=et&text=tillukke
The plant offered is in bud.

The two DRYAD GOLDS available tonight are DRYAD GOLD SCEPTRE t- strong growing, medium height with large flowers, and the last DRYAD GOLD INGOT with it’s yellow ovary and large olive-green inner mark on a compact plant. INGOT is the latest of the Dryad Gold group into flower.

As a reverse of DRYAD GOLD INGOT, we have two varieties with a green ovary and yellow inner mark:
MOTHER GOOSE – is a somewhat mercurial snowdrop which at its best is an eye-catching plant with a green ovary and deep yellow inner mark.
More reliable and always opening already a good yellow is Hagen Engelmann’s DAS GELBE VOM EI, shorter than MOTHER GOOSE and with narrower leaves, the two varieties are distinct.

The two ESTONIAN SPIRIT varieties are CLONE 2009/CS3 - I think this is the first time we have offered this clone, and we only have one plant to spare.
Taavi’s notes on this variety: Found on the Island of Hiiumaa, Käina village, in an abandoned garden, 2006
Height 16 cm, outer segments 22 mm
Growing to only 8cm here, with upright leaves, and flowers on a long pedicel. Both ovary and inner mark are very pale olive, the inner mark being paler at the ‘bridge’ over the sinus. A rare chance to add this one to your collection.

The other spirit is CLONE 2009/CS4. This clone is distinctive for its darker, more olive yellow mark, with a very narrow bridge, contrasting with a clear yellow, more rounded ovary. The flower hangs free of the spathe on a fairly long pedicel, the thicker textured outer segments being fairly strongly cupped, with a short claw. Flowers at 7cm high here. Leaves short at flowering.

Tonight’s doubles all hail from Estonia – firstly from the ESTONIAN BIRDS GROUP, the last of KIUR - flowering at about 10cm high, the flowers are usually very regular, with 3 outer segments and a beautifully regular boss of inner segments, each boldly marked with a green 'bridge' at the sinus, flaring into a wide oval towards the base.
The other two doubles were both found in abandoned Estonian gardens by Taavi Tuulik:
MUKU (‘Muku’ means ‘lovely’ or ‘pretty’) The plants grow to 15cm and the flowers have 3-4 outer segments and several neat and regular whorls of inner segments with a dark green inverted V at the apex.

MÄKI is a charming small double G. nivalis seedling found in the village of Jausa, Estonia. (Mäki - sounds like Mc'i in English). The outer segments have green lines at the apex, and the regular inner segments have a dark green mark over the sinus, bleeding back in lines towards the base.

Finally, coming to me from Hagen Engelmann in Germany, GEISHA AUGEN is an elegant little snowdrop, flowering at about 10-12 cm high with upright leaves and long-clawed flowers hanging from a curved spathe.
The inner segments have a distinctive double mark, consisting of a very dark green apical W-shaped mark, looking rather like a moustache, and towards the base a pale green V, which is sometimes broken into 2 halves, giving the effect of exotically tilted oriental eyes – presumably leading to the name (Geisha Eyes). Not sure the moustache fits with the geisha theme though!

Our LAST listings for this season are now live for ONE DAY only – ie they finish tomorrow night, Monday.
This is the final chance to bid for our classic DRYAD favourites – DRYAD DEMETER, DRYAD VENUS, DRYAD GOLDs RIBBON, SCEPTRE and STANDARD.
The last of the little ESTONIAN BIRD DOUBLE KIUR, and ESTONIAN SPIRIT 2009-CS4 are also included, along with the two German varieties, DAS GELBE VOM EI and GEISHA AUGEN.

NEW for this session, the only bulbs to be listed of the following:

ESTONIAN BIRD DOUBLE TUTKAS - named after the Estonian for Ruff (Philomachus pugnax), it is a very refined double snowdrop starting to open at less than 10cm high. The stiffly upright, hooded, supervolute leaves present the flowers beautifully.
At first, the very regular flowers will fool you into thinking it is a single snowdrop, as the inner segments are so neatly arranged inside. There are 3 outer segments and a very tight whorl of inner segments bearing a deep green inverted V at the apex, usually joined to a matching zone in the basal half, but not reaching as far as the base.  The sturdy, almost cylindrical ovary is subtended by a curved spathe. This has become a nursery favourite.

From Hagen Engelmann’s garden, we offer two of his famous greens –
GREEN CROWN flowers at about 12cm high, the flowers have green lines in the apical half of the outer segments, except for the tip, which are merged together with paler green shading. The inner segments have a white rim with a deep green apical mark extending to half the length of the segment. This continues in paler tones with deeper striations right to the base.
GREENKEEPER flowers at about 13-15cm high, the flowers, held erect well above the splayed leaves, have bold green lines in the mid-third of the outer segments, which are merged together with paler green shading. The inner segments have a white rim with deep green at the apex, gradually shading through paler tones towards the white base.

Finally, two miniature snowdrops ideal for troughs and containers:
GRÜNER DONAUZWERG - A tiny G. nivalis from Hagen Engelmann in Germany with narrow, prostrate, rich green leaves, with no hint of the grey green seen in other G. nivalis. Flowering height only 5-6cm under glass. Name means ‘green Danube dwarf’
HATPIN (syn. ’Kübaranõel’) is a stunning miniature fl. Pleno found by Taavi Tuulik in a garden in Suuremõisa village, Hiiumaa, in 2009. A tiny treasure, very neat full double. HATPIN has to be in the running for the tiniest double snowdrop, not only very miniature but usually perfectly regular flowers. A gem.

REMEMBER – only one day to bid on these – good luck!
