This Erythronium idahoense (I received the seeds as E. grandiflorum ssp. candidum from Ron Ratko) has been flowering facing upwards for several years. I saw a picture of a similar up-facing E. grandiflorum var. pallidum from Ed Alverson in International Rock Gardener and was wondering if it is a trait of these species or just a coincidence.

Interesting! Is your up-facing Erythronium E. idahoense or E. grandiflorum?

Many of my friends grow Erythronium americanum and report few or no flowers. I counted 33 flowers in my patch this year. I suspect it's the form, not my great growing ability.

Hi all,

I've read or heard somewhere that there are two strains of E. americanum in the wild -- one that produces sexually and one that multiplies almost exclusively vegetatively. Around here the latter is by far the most common, sadly. We see lots of americanum foliage in the woods in spring, but very few flowers.
