Piet and Anja Oudolf, later in the day Piet was awarded the the first ever RHS ‘The Elizabeth Medal of Honour’. The medal will be confined to 70 recipients at any one time in reference to the 70 years of her Majesty’s reign.

President Colin Crosbie  says:
"I really enjoyed the gardens at the show, there was a greater range of different styles of gardens compared to previous years.
The wildflowers or ‘weeds’ were not quite as obvious as I had expected, there has been too much hype on this subject!
The standard of the gardens was exceptionally high. Like all gardeners I had a few favourites. These included The Nurture Landscapes Garden designed by Sarah Price, The Savills Garden designed by Mark Gregory , the Myeloma UK Garden designed by Chris Beardshaw and A Letter from a Million Years Past Korean Garden designed by Jihae Hwang."

Maggi, I don,t agree with Colin Crosbie,s statement about wild flowers or "weeds." There is not enough publicity about the plight of our wildlife, especially flowers. A ten year survey by the BSBI has revealed that there are now more alien species growing in the wild than our own native plants. A lot more needs to be done to reverse the decline in our wild plants due to invasive foreign species. Featuring our wild flower species in showcase gardens helps to draw attention to the problem, in my opinion.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ian that “there is not enough publicity about the plight of our wildlife, especially flowers”. As well as highlighting the dangers of non-native plants escaping into the wild, the BSBI report points out the positive effect on some native species of sowing wild-flower and pollinator seed mixes. Horticultural events such as Chelsea would seem to be entirely appropriate for raising awareness of these issues and participating organisations should be seen to be supporting this.

I'm not sure, but I think Colin was referring to the hype we saw  about "all  Chelsea gardens featuring wild flowers"..... just the way I read it.

You are probably correct about Collin's reference; but; any reference to wildflowers as weeds is counterproductive to conservation efforts.  If wildflowers, especially endangered wildflowers, are regarded as weeds; conservation efforts are doomed to fail.

   I agree with you there. It is too heartbreaking to see lovely flowering areas cut down in mid flower as victims of "tidyness" as is so often the case with municipal areas.
